Truth be told, I try and stay off the roads wherever possible, so it's only the issues of dogs and feral children that crop up. You can get pretty much all the way round the Sunderland and S. Tyneside off road anyway. Mind, I still don't take them out on the road.
On a Motorbike you have your own engine noise, I still would never go out on it with ear phones in like.
Back to the cycling thing was on a very narrow road a few weeks ago, could hear the boy racers coming the other way at 70 80 mph heading towards a blind brow. That 6th sense kicked in, I reckoned they wouldn't see me till too late and either put me over the bonnet or themselves through the hedge.
Got off the bike and jumped in the hedge. Just one of many.
As I said earlier, each to their own but I wouldn't Cycle, walk, Jog or Motorcycle with in ear head phones in. I'm far to valuable.

    Why take the chance?

It's the same for cyclists who jump red lights. Yes it'll get you there slightly quicker, but is your life really worth so little to you that you'd take the chance?

I do neither. I'm worth it.

How? I've done it for 20 years safely. I never have the music blasting so I'm aware of any hazards. Some people in cars have music much louder.

Cos it's good to listen to music & can be done safely. If it wasn't it would be illegal.

you need all the information you can get when cycling.

Your brain processes loads of stuff without you being aware. Sounds of other vehicles etc will be being used to make millions of little decisions every second. To block out that sense and go round roundabouts etc is just daft IMO.

However, since it is unlikely you will be able to pinpoint the lack of information you are receiving as the reason you get knocked off your bike, you keep doing it marra.

Pedestrians using headphones are at higher risk of being in an accident, when stepping into traffic.

Again, as long as they don't blame the driver, I couldn't care less if they lived or died.

    even wiggo says so:

Speaking at a news conference shortly after the incident, Britain's cycling gold medallist Bradley Wiggins called for safety helmets to be made compulsory.

He said: "It's dangerous and London is a busy city and a lot of traffic. I think we have to help ourselves sometimes.

"Cycling is a dangerous sport. I know there are a lot of people out there who ride bikes who abide by everything, the laws the lights and things.

"But there are a lot of cyclists as well who don't help themselves, riding along with no helmets on, iPods on, this, that and the other on those Bojo things.

"There's got to be laws that protect both parties. Things like legalising helmets, making them the law to wear. They shouldn't be riding along with phones and iPods on, shouldn't be riding without lights."

Here in Holland loads of people cycle while listening to music and it does not seem to be a problem. I think there are two main reasons for this. Firstly, there is a whole network of cycle lanes to keep the cyclists apart from vehicles, secondly and i think much more important is the attitude of vehicle drivers towards cyclists. Unlike the "cyclists are a fucking nuisance who should not be on the road delaying my journey by 20 seconds" attitude of a lot of British drivers the Dutch use courtesy and common sense towards cyclists, also cyclists have priority over vehicles. A different mindset altogether. Sadly, until the mindset of British drivers and politicians changes cyclists will continue to play lotto with their lives at the hands of shit, erratic drivers with bad attitude.
