I'd say that you need at least that much after you've paid for the flights over mate. Cairns is tropical so it's hot and sunny pretty much all year except for the cyclone season but I don't think Cairns gets hit that hard. I only spent a couple of weeks there so there'll be other posters who can give you better info, all my time was spent in Sydney.

There's a good way to travel the country that I heard about but never tried so you'll have to google it if you fancy the sound of it. basically you deliver cars or campervans for car-hire companies. So for a couple of $ (you only pay for the petrol), you get to travel the country between A+B. You have a set amount of time to do it depending on how big the distances are, but it's a great way to see the country and if you take some mates, you can share the petrol as well! well worth looking in to!

People like to travel 10,000 mile to pick fruit in a snake infested desert for minimum wage.

    Life can't be that bad.

That sounds canny, do you only need a UK driving license to do that? Also would you not need a full years visa to do that?

UK licence is fine. A WHV is one year anyway.

I did the relocation thing a few years ago. It was brilliant. Moved campervans from Melbourne to Adelaide, up to Alice Springs and on to Darwin. One of them was a wass 6 berther with TV and playstation. They cost $1 a day to make the insurance valid and I got a fuel allowance.

Actually I reckon you would have to be 21 to be able to do it due to the insurance.

have a look here mate http://www.standbyrelocs.com/

I've just had a quick look on that site and for an example, they can give you 6 days to get from Cairns to Sydney in a 4-berther with a shower and toilet. They also give you the first $260 of fuel and want $5 a day rental for it!

It might be a bit of a mission to get down there in 6 days like but if there's 4 of you sharing, then it'll be class and would be a great way to see the country!

...think I might do this myself next year actually!
