Atherton has a brain and uses it, Flintoff doesn't.

As for Atherton's average, it went down a lot in later years when he played with a chronic back problem. Also worth remembering the opening bowlers at time he played - Wasim, Waqar, Ambrose, Walsh, Donald, Pollock, McGrath, etc. If he survived them, he had to contend with Warne, Murali, Kumble, Mushtaq, Saqlain...
Cook is a fine player but opening bowlers are very poor at the moment. Steyn is very good and he and Morkel will be a test.
