Have we cocked up again? New academy rules (Elite Player Performance Plan) being introduced 2012/13 will remove the 11/2 hour traveling distance rule for kids. Kids will also reside with the club and attend local schools. These means the top clubs can take kids from anywhere in the country and move them into their club.

I can't see us getting planning permission to erect residential premises at the Aol and we still haven't put the barn up yet. Maybe these changes are the real reason the barn hasn't gone up. From progressing to the best academy in the region it looks like the rug is going to be pulled out from under us and the pick of local kids could be moving out of the area.

the club has owned places where the young players have been housed. Malcom Crosby ran one in the early 90's with his wife before he toke over as manager.

It might have been okay back then when young lads had left school at 15/16 but what we are talking about now is kids probably 11/12 or even younger and we are also talking about quite a number of them. If the kids aren't going to be living at the academy then it becomes a lot more expensive not to mention the logistics involved if kids are scattered individually around the city.

I'm not sure what hoops we will have to jump through to achieve a category one academy or to what level (there are four levels apparently) we will enter this new plan - assuming we do. As I read it failure to achieve level one would see us losing the likes of Henderson at a much younger age to higher up the ladder academies.

Sorry if I came across as glass half empty (it was early) but I'm suggesting that these changes to the academy setup may have some bearing on our failure to erect the barn yet and could cost us a lot of cash if we don't achieve category one status.

It's just another way for the richest clubs (Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Liverpool and Chelsea) to get further ahead by being given permission by the Premier League to freely poach from everyone but each other.

It seems to read that if we aren't in the top bracket then those that are will be able to poach the likes of Henderson, Colback and Laing before they even break into the first team without us even being allowed to fight them off and with the PL giving those clubs permission to take whoever they want.

It's not going to improve young players, it will just mean the bigger clubs will stockpile more youngsters than they already do.
