Contrary to popular belief the word 'Soccer' is very much an English word and was in common use in this country at the end of the 19th century. It's an abbreviation of 'association' and the 'er' bit was added in the same way that Rugby became 'Rugger'.

On the BBC highlights of us being beaten in 1950, the Beeb called it soccer, heard it today

Popular belief is that it's an English word that was in common use in the 19th century.........this ISN'T the 19th century though but.
