My daughter (no) is in the market for a new Canon 6D probably with a 24 - 105 F4L IS USM.

Can anyone recommend a decent local (NE) or national supplier.

Grey imports are obviously cheaper than official stock but don't have Canon's warranty.

Are they worth the risk?

Thanks in advance.

Amazon usually works for me.

Having said that, I always make sure I hold a camera before I buy it - that'll be the major factor in whether it gets used in the long run.

http://www.charleseaglesandson.com/index.htm might be a good starting point.

She's tried a 6D and likes the feel of it.

I always used Chas Eagles back in the day for my B&W print stuff but had forgotten they were still trading.

We'll give them a go first.

Thanks.

National - Wex. Their customer service is brilliant.

I had a 6D grey import from hdew and didn't have any problems with it

I'm fairly sure that you get a 1 year international warranty with the higher end Canon stuff whether grey import or not but could be wrong. You wouldn't get the 2nd year UK warranty, but often the companies selling them offer additional warranty/insurance at a good price and repairs are normally done at one of the UK Canon service centres anyway.

Also look out for Canon "cashbacks" sometimes these are a decent refund but you could only get them on UK official dealers on non-grey stuff.

As Ross said, HDEW are fine, UK based, and have been around a while, but they do sell grey imports.

Check out camerapricebuster to see who is doing the best UK deals.

The direct grey imports from the likes of Hong Kong aren't looking very good value at the moment, presumably due to the fall in the value of sterling.

Thanks Roger.

Just to get a feel for the warranty implications, from your experience what's the reliability record of new Canon stuff?

I daren't say anything in case it all breaks!

No problems so far with any of my Canon stuff and some of my kit has taken a real hammering. So from my experience, fine. But that doesn't mean you won't get a lemon.

Personally I am happy to buy grey imports (they are the same camera after all), but it's nice to know there is some local cover/support and you wouldn't have to ship it off back abroad in case of problems.
If I could get the same or a close price locally, I would always choose that.

Thanks for your replies lads.

I always try to support local businesses so we'll try Eagles first and give them a chance to compete.

Cheapest I've found up to now is £1263 ish on Amazon Market Place but I suspect it's a grey import.

Just noticed the camerapricebuster link I put up and the link you put up too aren't for the 24 - 105 F4L IS USM lens...they are for a 24-105 kit lens instead.

The HDEW £1455 is for the L lens, not the kit one. Make sure you order the right one wherever you end up going!

Yeah sorry, I got confused.

We're going for the L series lens and the best deal is £1455 from HDEW.

Thanks again.

Wex and srs microsystems are both excellent to deal with.
Grey imports, try microglobe, they have a physical shop in london, and do mail order. I go on a pentax forum and a lot of lads on there have bought from them with no problems.
The main drawback of grey imports though is the warranty.

I see the 5D Mk 4 is about to hit the shelves. There will probably be lots of barely used 5D Mk 3s hitting the second hand market soon.

HDEW Cameras honour the Canon warranty as far as I know. I have a 5D3 from them. Currently thinking of purchasing a Canon 16-35 F4 L from them.
