He didn't retire during the middle of an embarrassing ashes series defeat. And Stokes with a broken hand?
Johnson retired after a series win against New Zealand and a dead rubber to go.

There's a difference when it's an Ashes series and we've just been humilated 3-0. Why not stay and help a young legspinner in Scott Borthwick?
Fair play to Ian Bell.
Not picked for England and instead of going in a strip buckles down and says he wants to give his best for Warwickshire and help the youngsters.
Realises what the club did for him and for his career.
Unlike that little shit Hussain. He could have given Essex a year or so and then retire.
A lot of players who when their Test Careers end drop their County players in an instant even when they are when they were on a good wack despite maybe on playing a few games or so during the season.

Good post but bells only playing to get his contract back with ecb he might care he might not but Warwickshire are certainly benefitting from a motivated playerFair play to Ian Bell.

Trott was a different kind of case, as it was mental the best thing for him health-wise would be to get out of the environment.Trott did the same series. Retiring half way through though nah
He s about as funny as having toothache and earache at the same time and a hangover.and everything I thought he would be..
f***ing excruciating.....thinks he's a real wit

People fail to realise that cricketers have families and their own careers to manage
On the whole these are not multi millionaires like footballers, so why you expect them to do something noble is beyond me
You wouldn't in your jobs
I'm not always full of shit mate
what the fuck are you on about?
Exactly, living in a hotel 300 days a year isn't easy like, makes me laugh the judgment cricketers get. Most of the ones discussed here are pre-IPL era, where the money wasn't amazing.

I think that is massively unfair to be honest like. The bloke had captained England for years, touring all over the world, having to deal with political issues that no cricketer should ever have to deal with, dragging the standards of our Test cricket side up to a very competitive level and left the set up in a very healthy shape for Vaughan to take on.
He was in his mid to late 30s when he retired from England duty, after twenty years of playing county and international cricket I think he was quite entitled to retire when he did. Completely different situation to Bell
I suspect that no touring team would want a imminent retiree hanging around. A professional sportsman retiring is likely to be a right miserable bastard quite honestly. Its not the same as Joe Public who spends his last 10 years of employed life looking forward to packing in.
very lucky with collingwood still having the drive, he has been exceptional.
how do you feel about that fat shitstain key? he seems to have jacked in cricket to be a commentator and he was mainly a county man anyway. surely he could still be playing for a ferw more years, i guess his knees might not like draging his lardy frame around or has he been crap recently anyway?
also it's essex so who gives a fuck
only the last ten??
The fat waste of space hadnt been scoring runs for Kent for many years.
The emergence of wonder-kid, Daniel Bell-Drummond who has an unbeaten double hundred, a century and five tos in his last 6 innings hastened his exit.
He knew he'd lost his place and made a weak excuse to leave and joined the Sky gravy train.
Good Riddance I say.
He wanted to be captain. He relinquished the captaincy. He wanted it again. He didn't.....
Good luck to Darren Stevens on his benefit season this year. Classy performer over the years with us and still going strong at 40.
Well done Folly for showing that motivation and drive to keep going. And a massive Lads fan to boot....Ha'waaaaayyyyyyyy
When they were querying what could be wrong with Aleem Dar, Swann suggested he'd maybe had too much stotty cake and pease pudding in some pathetic North East accent.
I was embarrassed for him.
