How can you stop the home team supporters watching the games?

They'd have to subscribe to 19 other clubs away packages to do that......and obviously an individual would only be allowed to subscribe to one package. Of course a Man Utd fan living in Sunderland could watch Man U v Sunderland on a mates tv but he'd have to have mates in 18 other cities/towns too if he wanted to watch the lot.

What about the team that's playing at home when we're away?

Well obviously if there are any supporters of that club living in an area where a Sunderland fan has purchased an away season ticket then he may or may not let them watch it with him.......but he'd need friends who support every other club too if he wanted to watch the lot.

But a lot of people will want to watch home games. Restrict that and they'll just stick to illegal streams which we've pretty much decided aren't going to be stopped. People should have the choice, if you want to sit in the house and legally watch a sunderland home game you should be allowed to, it's then up to Sunderland to ensure attending remains an attractive option. With the extra money this move would make they'd probably be in a better position financially even if it did knock a couple of thousand off the gate

Sorry but I disagree totally with you.

They aren't any 3pm games broadcast in this country yet they still cant stop people watching them. How would they ever be able to police it if they are available to certain people in the country?

Now then Quinny :)

I think it's reasonable for several reasons to allow away games to be broadcast but people need to get off their lazy arses and get themselves over to home games. The youth of today......

Technology man........bloody technology....

Charge £20 a year for live matches. Problem solved.
Except that opens up streaming to the masses, those with limited technical ability can simply watch at home now rather than go to the game. This is a risk to attendances. They need to set pricing somewhere reasonable, on a PAYG basis, £5 per game. £5 for a non-buffering HD stream is more than a reasonable cost.

This was always going to be an issue when they sold the rights to show every game to foreign countries.

To me this whole article makes little sense, as I thought the live streaming rights are up for bidding the next time the deal is renewed (3 years I think). Many online broadcasters including Amazon got involved in the bidding process for next year's deal just to get a feel for it. (Unless I dreamed reading the stories)
It is rumoured they will operate a similar policy to American football in the US where there is a "blackout zone" around the stadium for home games and if you live in that zone you can watch delayed coverage (30 minutes iirc), outside of that zone you can watch live. If the game sells out the blackout is lifted and coverage will be live within the zone.
Just hope the prices are reasonable.

People not wanting home games to be streamed aren't being realistic, the premier league have to at least match what is on offer currently (illegal or not). Otherwise the illegal streams will still be widely used.
