@Cridge will naa but he's pulled a Harry Houdini.
I wish he would let us arl naa he okay. Really worried about him

Some Villa fans' memories of that day in '75:

"I was in the Holte as usual. Sunderland had taken the Witton end and had another 5000 in Aston park."

"I was a 12 year old in the Witton End with my dad in our usual spot, though there must have been 12-14 thousand Sunderland fans there. They were as good as gold - we stopped them getting promoted and although I went mental for each of our goals not a word or look was sent my way."

"I left the Aston Tavern to walk to the ground as about 30 coachloads of Sunderland supporters were leaving the Serpentine car park. We were dressed from head to foot in claret & blue and walked in the middle of them down to the Witton Lane Holte End turnstile and didn't get so much as a dirty look. After the game while we were celebrating in the ground thousands of them were marched back up Witton Lane past the Holte End and were applauding us. Amazing sportsmanship under any circumstances but particularly so since we had cheered when the Norwich result was announced. Always had a soft spot for Mackems ever since."

"I was there that day and stood on the Witton End with all of the Sunderland fans. As people have said, there must have been 15k plus of them in the ground."

"What a day though VP packed to the rafters party time before during and after. I too thought how good the Sunderland fans was before and after the game always liked them over the geordies."

The only game I couldn't get into, had to watch in Aston Park with thousands more, terrible day

I was at the two before it at Bolton and Oxford. I was only 10 at the time. Losing 1-0 at Oxford killed us that day. Seems such a long time ago in some ways yet like yesterday in others.

Crazy day that Oxford game, the game was irrelevant for all the goings on! Yes we lost, they scored a screamer to dent our promotion hopes but when one of our lot jumped onto the pitch and attacked their goalie and full backs!!

Some Oxford fans' memories of that day in '75:

"Towards the end of that same season, we were at home to Sunderland who were closing in on ManUre in the promotion battle. Naturally they brought a large contingent and were packed into Cuckoo Lane. Five minutes from time Colin Clarke struck a beauty to open the scoring and poor Sunderland could see promotion slipping away. From the Cuckoo Lane emerged this enormous Wearsider who grabbed our keeper, John Milkins, and, egged on by the fans from up north, started to hit him about the head and ruffle up his wonderfully Brylecreamed hair. It took half the Oxford team to bring him down before two coppers escorted the gigantic intruder out. As they passed us, I said something to the effect that he was a very naughty boy. Whereupon, he stopped and gave me the evil eye. I don't know who was more terrified, me or the coppers."

"Sunderland brought so many they filled left side London Road and still had enough left over to fill Cuckoo Lane too. It was the biggest visiting crowd I had seen at The Manor..."

"Anyone remember the games v Sunderland in the 70's? Colin Clarke's great goal, a terrific 25 yarder that stopped them getting promotion and they went crazy and one of them ran on and attacked our keeper John Milkins, I always felt sorry for Milkins, he always looked old and it must of been difficult with such a hero in Roy Burton being the fans favourite. Then there was the time v Sunderland that the back of the London road was broken up and thrown at each other in the left and right side, which resulted in a lot of cut heads."

Great days sigh .....

Great days sigh .....

We certainly seemed to manage to make an impression up and down the country in those days.

There were some almighty invasions the following season as well (when we finally got promoted) - as fans of York, West Brom, Notts County, Blackpool, Hull etc etc will no doubt remember...
