Newcastle were superb to watch back then and Keegan did a great job,if he'd invested in his defence a bit more god knows what they might have achieved, thank god he didn't.

Agreed, it's all relative though, isn't it? Excellent seasons for Newcastle, but they would have been decent to poor for man u for instance.

Going back to this seeing at at the time when these finishes started Man Utd had only won the league once since 1967, finishes of 3rd, 5th, 2nd and 2nd still might have been looked on as good/very good seasons.

We won the league that newcastle blew their 12 points lead mate.
Shearer didn't play for them then.

I was speaking more generally on that period overall - Sunderland certainly weren't the winners whichever way it's looked at. They had a redeveloped stadium, a top side, exciting football, cash to chuck about and a city being heavily invested in making it an attractive proposition. The Keegan era and everything that went with it was a shit period for SAFC

I was specifically talking about the season they blew the 12 point lead mate. That's the only season they actually challenged for the title.
Can't argue with the rest of what you said. But I stand by my original point that ultimately we enjoyed that season more than them.

Not a chance.

So apart from spending £50 million, losing a 12 point lead and starting the rot that saw you relegated, what would you say we're the main things he did? In terms of trophies, titles and so on.
He was one centre half from winning the title. He made Newcastle a top four club regularly. We hated it but he was very good for them the first time.

In retrospect we probably did, but at the time we probably only enjoyed about 25% of it, but that 25% was the last 10 or so games, which ultimately decided the outcome of the season.

I hated the 75% before that -In fact at christmas that season I was at my mag supporting cousins house and I had a look through the Newcastle xmas special magazine. In it was the A-Z of NUFC. E was apparently for European cup as this was what Newcastle would be playing in the next season. It even stated “we know the season is not over yet (you don’t say!), but Newcastle as good as won the league months ago”. Steam metaphorically started coming out of my ears at that point and I think I used paraphrased Keegan a few months before he even uttered those immortal words – “I’d Love it if they blew it, LOVE IT!!!”.
