Running Thread 2015

With all this rain, i decided to plug in the missus's treadmill.
Only managed 15 mins and i was beat !
Dont know if it was boredom or what but it was damned hard work..
Guess i'll just use it as a short workout for the next couple of months when the weather is too shabby to go outside.

running in the rain is one of lives great pleasures - give it a try mate :)

My hip problems, and this isn't uncommon, come from a lack of flexibility of my opposite ankle (dorsiflexion). Might be worth trying some tests on your ankle flexibility to see if it is less than it should be, or the other ankle has.

If it is that, regular mobility exercises on it may help.

I have been struggling with squat depth and it's ankle inflexibility on one side that's the problem.

Here are some decent articles if anyone wants to test and improve the ankle dorsiflexion, I might post a new thread on this forum on the subject as it affects quite a few exercises.

The mobility test on my left ankle is pretty embarrassing ... no matter what I do I can't seem to improve it. Would recommend the book "Ready to Run" for various mobility tests and exercises to show up your weak spots and how to try and work on them.

Thanks, it seems my left ankle is knacked too. I was predominantly left footed when I played amateur footy so that may be to blame. It's probably too late to become Stretch Armstrong but I'm going to give it a try. Flying a desk and driving for 2 hours a day doesn't help either.

On the treadmill today, 3.85km in 30 mins, up from 3k last week. Steady progress. Want to do 5k in 30 mins by New Year. Not sure if realistic though.

Never heard of that one mate ? I know a few who are doing a 5mile race (flat n fast) in Newcastle Saturday ? I'm away on a weekend bender with friends but hopefully can get my trainers back on next week

This one mate, it's a handicapped event like the XC so I'll be chasing which I quite enjoy.

I'm away this weekend too, sadly just with the wife though for our anniversary. In Edinburgh Friday/Saturday and have been told in no uncertain terms that I'm not doing Edinburgh park run whilst we're away :) so I'm hoping to get away with the blyth run instead

You not ran since Brampton mate ?

Liverpool for me mate, fri/sat, one of the lads 40th, have a good time
running - just ran the once since Brampton, an easy 3.5mile, no reaction in calf (swam couple times) gonna start up properly again next week, hopefully.

edit - has anybody read the book "Marathon and chips" by Jim Alder ? tried to get it but for some reason it seems to be selling at daft prices

double edit - sunderland strollers have their "doorstep half marathon" on this sunday (6th not 7th) , all for a great cause -

fletch its a nightmare mate, hopefully ive got to the bottom of it now, it seems the way I land is the problem with my knee turning in, so im currently working on the gluets to try and stop that turning in motion, going to be slow though, had 2 weeks rest and started again last week 12 miles in total, going for 20 miles this week and adding 5 a week until I get back to were I was a month ago, I really hope this is the cure and I can just get on with training again

Squats & deadlifts marra. http://stronglifts.com/5x5/ 3 weeks after starting that I knocked aminute off my 5k pb without any other changes in training.

Doing Gateshead Parkrun was fun this morning, a bit breezy!! Got a 5k pb according to my strava though, a big surprise after not running at all for 3-4 weeks. Need to drag myself back to club on Tuesday night to push on with the progress.

Canny 11 miler training run today, first 5 miles shuffling uphill into wind, last 6 bounding down coast road wind assisted tempo!! Best of both worlds
