Running Thread 2015

Posted in SMB but probably get better advice in here. I am after a wrist fitness strap thing - got to have heart rate - and was wondering if anyone has found/seen any good deals on this there black Friday?

How is this, decent deal?

Finally started running, first time properly since I was 16 I think (I'm 26). Need help here lads.

Ran 3k on the treadmill which I was chuffed with, in 30 mins, I know its pathetic, but its a start. Going to buy some canny running shoes when I am off next week.

Any advice as to how easy or hard to push myself, I have tried that couch to 5k thing before but I just don't think it suits me, I prefer it in the gym, and I don't like stop, starting.

Must admit really felt positive after just one run, felt I'd done something with my day, exactly what I need

Keep it up - is the best advice I think anyone can give.

You will naturally run further and faster as you do it more and more. Don't push yourself too much or set unrealistic expectations. Make it a habit that you enjoy!

I've just bought one of these...

Gets delivered today. Suits me for my triathlon training and links to all my other Garmin gear (HRM, Edge 500, Virb).

I'll post a mini review on here if people are interested when I've had a play around for a week or so.

Well done mate , keep doing that 2 or 3 times a week so that legs recover in between , maybe increase the distance slightly each week (extra 5mins on each run) til running 5mile . Could look at joining a local running club after the new year ? - strollers or harriers , both have great set up , just depends which nights fit in best for you. Keep us posted how you get on , don't try up your mileage too quickly though as will get injured , think long term

Good luck to any SMBers doing the XC today

Cheers mate, I physically couldn't do much further than that, so just going to do as you say, little bit at a time. I'm not overweight in the slightest, just really unfit, would love to aim for a half marathon. Will keep an eye out on this thread anyway, cheers!

I was in the same position as you this time last year, the furthest I could run was about 3km and I would be exhausted afterwards! It's brilliant to feel yourself getting stronger and faster though and I can run 10km comfortably now. It would be more but due to illness I had to take six months off all physical activity. I started running again this month and, incredibly, I haven't lost that much pace. I'm doing a half marathon in February.

Just don't take it too seriously and remember that the only person you meed to beat is yourself, it's not something to measure yourself against others.

Anyone else doing Run Northumberland Big 10 Miler tomorrow?

Brilliant that mate. How did you do it? Just a few runs a week or what? My legs have been so stiff since that run mind!

Just kept going out to run, that was it! Nowt fancy about it  . I'd say don't force yourself though, if you don't fancy it one night then just go the next (slipery slope like). I just got better as time went on. Your legs will get stronger after a bit! I do find that L Glutamine supplements help too.

Spot on, best approach for me, I can run further on the treadmill than when outside like, strange. Will go for one today.

It's to do with footstrike. If you're on a treadmill, your foot is landing in the same position and same terrain each time so your legs kind of get lazy and just plod on. Outside each step is different so your foot and all your leg muscles are constantly working and adjusting to keep you balanced and it makes it harder. Also a gym treadmill is in a climate controlled room. Outside you've got the weather to contend with as well, especially if it's windy, raining or there's sun beating down on you.

Yep, absolutely nailed it there. I just find it much more enjoyable in the gym though

Hampton Court.
might do that one too...

Don't push too hard too soon and get injured. Easiest way to avoid it is to mix up the training, some short or longer, steady pace or interval, treadmill or outside etc. You'll find you improve more than you thought possible if you keep at it and keep enjoying it. Good luck!

This is kind of true. Its because on a treadmill the forward momentum is done by the motorised belt - you just need to 'hop' up and down on it without the need to propel yourself forward. To replicate road running put the treadmill on around 3-4 degrees incline - that way you have to push yourself up the belt - just like creating forward momentum on the road. hope that makes sense !!
