How about a photography course?

I did a weekend one in London when I it my first one. Maybe there's summat similar where you live?

That's a spot on idea.

Although upon investigation it seems the opportunities in Norwich are rather limited compared to London

The place has a newly chartered 'University of the Arts' which doesn't even run a photography evening class or anything!

I'd like to get one for my lass for Christmas. I suppose the question is what's the least you'd spend on a camera which will do the job of allowing her to learn about photography and won't be absolutely shit?

Or merge this with existing threads on the subject!

I am entry level and just got a Nokia D3200 superb camera

After a starter DSLR camera myself for daughter , the one mentioned at start of thread , Nixon D3300 sounds a good entry level one - are there likely to be any deals Black Friday or owt or do cameras rarely get reduced

Have look on digitalreview for their prices.

If you're after something cheaper you could look at the grey market. Lots of photographers use the likes of Panamoz and save a pretty penny.

Just get a grey import from Portus Digital or the likes. Save a ton on it and there's no issues whatsoever.

I bought the Nikon D3300 about a year ago as my first DSLR. Great camera and I got a cracking price from Portus Digital.

Had it out at the weekend to get some pictures of the seal colonies on the Norfolk coast.

Lots to learn like as the results are shite

Didn't help that the barriers have been moved back from last year, we anticipated being a lot closer and didn't have a lense really capable of the job.

Think Nikon have a 70-300 f4-5.6 in their range. Don't expect professional results but it'll give you that reach for wildlife on a budget while she dips her toe into it. Photography can be a very expensive gig if she gets into it.

Is this the sort of thing you mean as a lense for getting long-ish range shots of wildlife?

If so I'll pick this up as we're going to pretty much share use of the camera, so I may as well contribute to the gear.

yer. It's an entry level zoom so don't expect amazing results, but it's a cost effective method of getting the reach needed for wildlife.

Jessops currently have the Tamron 70-300 in Nikon fit for £89.99.
I had the Pentax version and for a budget lens its not bad. Suffers from purple fringing at 300mm, but for 90 quid!
Also does "macro", of sorts.
