No you're right, its a horrible disgusting disease and can cause huge mental and physical harm. Once it's got hold of you it's horrendously difficult to get rid of. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

What you've described is something like Cancer or Dementia.

Alcoholism is an self inflicted addiction.

I saw him at a sportsmans dinner at the Barnes in 1987,he was stone cold sober at the time, his stories and general craic were superb,it was for some local charity and hosted by Charles Harrison (one for the oldies) at the end of the night George donated all his fee to the charity,he had a bit mix in at the end and was a nice fella, wish i'd had the hindsight to get a few autographs like.
He always came across as a lovely bloke when he was sober. Actually seemed pretty shy.

What a berk!
Of all the addictions, alcoholism is one of the hardest to kick - it is an illness, not something you do with a clear head.

And the night I sat next to him, he was guest speaker, did it for a fraction of his normal fee, didn't touch a drop of alcohol, and must have had his photo taken or given his autograph to everybody there (over 300) even if he was half way through his dinner, a really nice, gentle man. He was tiny too - I asked him if the big lads he played football with in Belfast when he was a kid didn't kick lumps out of him - he just said 'they couldn't catch me'!

A supreme talent, a top bloke, but sadly very ill, for which he paid the price.

All of this FACT and if you cannot handle the facts. Leave the thread to them that knows best

I see you didnt check out the post that my comment related to, or conveniently ignored it, before getting smartass. Here it is-----

Nobody forced him to play football so why should we praise him?

All of this is fact and if I cant handle the facts leave the thread to others? I wasn't commenting on his well publicised excesses, my reply related to the above comment only, and I stand by it, it WAS inane, though the poster later said it was a joke, not apparent at the time. We should praise him for his on the pitch consummate skills

Get a grip.

Funny enough I went to see the Proclaimers just over a week a go at Leicester De Montfort Hall.

This thread reminded me of this song where they don't mention George Best my name but it's him they're singing about at 0:33
