Pakistan A v England

Stokes has had a poor two games, couldn't complain too much if he is dropped for the first test.

Yes he could, they were farce non games

In his last appearance he took 6 wickets to win the Ashes!

talk about fickle!

He is just one of those players. Flint off was the same. There will be games where they contribute fuck all but both Flintoff and Stokes have that extra little something about them where they can turn a game with one moment of brilliance. Might just be one spectacular catch, run out or one snorter of a ball when things aren't going to plan or there is a lull but it makes a huge difference.

For those reasons, Stokes has to play.

I can't believe people are taking notice of these games! He was excellent in his last test.

not the best against spin...not that any of the other batters with the exception of taylor are any better

Also, his bowling lacks patience and discipline to be effective in subcontinent conditions.

Don't have a tantrum Johnson.

His last test appearance was the Oval. He hit 15 and 0, and took 3 for 133.

Even if he'd had a great game, I would remain concerned about his effectiveness in subcontinent/Emirates conditions. Same goes for Jimmy.

Sorry?

I completely disagree. In terms of patience Stokes is exactly the kind of bowler you need over there. He's proved on many occasions already that no matter how badly it's going for him or the team he'll keep running in and keep bending his back. That was evidenced in Oz. Other bowlers for example will be off to the changing room for a lie down or a massage. Not Stokes.

He's an impatient player in general. By his own admission, he tries to take a wicket with every delivery.

" It is actually having the discipline to bowl the ball in the right spot on the pitch over and over again that is more important." Jason Gillespie, on bowling seam in the subcontinent.

You make out like thats a bad thing.

It's not how you bowl seam on the subcontinent.

Read my quote from Gillespie, who knows a bit about this bowling and coaching lark.

Another Dizzy quote,

"The big thing for me about bowling in the subcontinent is what I call the three rules – discipline, discipline and discipline. I think it’s so important that you have your plans and stick to them, and are absolutely ruthless in keeping them as simple as possible. Look to hit that off stump as much as possible with every ball that you can with the occasional bouncer at head height just to keep the batsmen on their toes and be absolutely disciplined and ruthless with that. The big thing for me about bowling in the subcontinent is what I call the three rules – discipline, discipline and discipline. Advice so good he apparently said it twice.

Smoker does have an irrational dislike of Stokes. Any daft knacker will know that Stokes is a shoe in for the first test and well beyond that. Inspirational cricketer who steps up to the plate when his team needs him whether its with bat, ball or in the field.
He will bowl well in the subcontinent - its nonsense to go by the practice games but saying as you did he went for less that 2 an over and is our best bowler at reversing it which you need out there. He is an utter shoe in.

What a load of shite.

I am a massive fan but he can hardly complain if he was left out after poor warm up games, bearing in mind his performances in Sri Lanka last winter and the need to shoe horn more spinners into the team. Finn will get the nod as third seamer, so BS will need to earn a place on his batting and others have played spin better so far this trip.

He is an utter shoe in.
And it's shoo-in, you clown shoe.

KP and Botham would barely have played a test match if selectors used that criteria

In the sub continent it could be a huge bonus to us if we have 4 seamers and 2 spinners.

Stokes is an excellent bowler of reverse swing, which is exactly what you need over there

I'm staggered that somebody can claim he could he rightfully dropped after 2 day games that Were a farce

Very strange

Stokes is an excellent bowler of reverse swing

He bowled excellent conventional swing at Trent Bridge, don't recall much reverse...

He hardly bowled in the ODI series against the crims, and used sparingly in the warm ups.

Like it or not, he's well down the pecking order in the seam bowlers. Finn looks in great nick. Wood will also be ahead of him for his outright pace. He needs to make a case with the bat.

Classic Johnson patter there.

The management won't view them as a farce...

I would go for that TBF.

I have a nagging feeling Buttler will play though.

Well we'll see. It's the kids first subcontinental tour for England so I'll forgive him if he doesn't quite get it right straight away. Smoker on the other hand will I'm sure throw him under the bus if he doesn't take a 10-fer next week.

Stop pissing your pants man. The squad is full of young lads who think they deserve to be in the team, he can't expect to keep his place if he only turns up one game in five.

I am sure we would play him every game regardless, but non Durham fans and the management might not see it that way.

It's his second subcontinent tour BTW.

First Test tour. That ODI farce last winter doesn't count as a tour.

Why not hoy in a bit of format-snobbery for good measure.

Of course, it was BS's form in white ball cricket (BBL) and two 'farcical' warm ups against St Kitts that got him a recall to the test team in WI.
