I have a cheap all terrain bike cost about £50 New almost 3 years ago. I've basically rode it in to the ground with very little maintenance. It's still going strong. But I'm considering spending about £300 and getting a half decent one. Will I notice a difference for the money? Also can't decide between a carrera, Viking, mizani and indigo? Any advice welcome. Also would a second hand specialized be worth the risk?

For the price you want to pay id go for a Ridgeback mate, had mine years and its been spot on. Keep it serviced and it will last you ages

Carrera out of them. What do you want to use the bike for?

Mainly for work and back approx 10 miles daily and occasionally a bit of off road . Wasn't sure on hybrid or mtb

That exactly what I'm worried about
Hybrid sounds best. Or even cyclo cross. Pop into cycled world and have a chat with people in there.

High street west, Sunderland town centre

Had a good look around spoke to a few different shops and decided to go for the carrera vengeance mountain bike. Was reduced at halfords down to £270. Hope I picked the right one. It was the cheapest.

The Carrera's are meant to be pretty good, got my MTB in 2013 from Halfords and it was a toss up between a Carrera (Vulcan I think) and a Voodoo Bantu. Went for the Bantu and it's been class.

Carreras are awful bikes. Whatever you do dont go to halfords for a bike. You will be able to get more for your money from evans

On the contrary the Carreras get good reviews across the board and I got a halfords bike which was reasonably priced and have had for coming up 3 years with no issues. People tend to scoff at Halford Bikes in the same way as they do PC World PCs quite often with a snobbish attitude, maybe you had a bad experience with them in which fair play but myself and quite a few other people I know have used them and had good experiences. One issue that crops up is the bike set ups from store to store which can vary immensely depending on the staff but the guys in the Sunderland store were spot on when I first went and have been every time since.

Shit wheels and shit tyres. Would never get a road bike from them. Im not being snobbish id just prefer to pay a little bit more

That's fair enough mate but for an entry level bike I don't think you can grumble. Admittedly I am looking to upgrade and not to another Halfords one but I can't knock the one I've had from them.
