Young un wants a moped

First off, make sure he gets decent kit(if its cheap it probably is cheap) second, tell him he doesn't want a scooter, he wants a derbi senda or an aprilia rs50. Both will have the lasses throwing their knickers at him and not his puffy mates on their scooters and if the feeling takes him he can derestrict them and get a very decent top speed from them.

Reet, I know jack shit about bikes and the young un,16 yrs old, wants his provsional license and a 50cc moped. Am I right in thinking that any daft knacker can get on a moped without any kind of test ?? What ball park figure are we talking about for insurance ? All guidance gratefully received oh wise SMB !

Slap him, and tell him to set sights higher than a hair dryer with wheels

If you're going to let him get one then do him a deal.

First get him to pass his theory test for moped/motorbike. It's 25quid and will learn him the laws of the road.

Get him to do a CBT, I recommend 2 wheels at Hendon. Brian doesn't take shit. And if he rocks up with a theory test he won't just be another scooter kid.

Once he has the CBT get him a few lessons 1 to 1, maybe 40 quid in total. this will make sure he doesn't kill himself anytime soon.

It'll be the best 150 or so quid he (you ) could spend.

Only then let him get the ped.

Give your head a shake, why would you want him to have one for?Highly likely he'll end up dead.

I'd not get a ped because they're death machines.

In fact in 44 years nobody I know has been killed whilst riding one.

Odds must be getting shorter.

Do not under any circumstances let him buy one of those Chinese imports. The seem a good deal for a brand new bike but in reality are a chunk of shit.
A second hand Honda SH125 is a superb scooter. The extra speed actually makes it safer than a 50 cc.

Still dangerous like as most motorists are terrible drivers

I've had a few small capacity bikes over the years (50-250cc) and I know 50cc bikes are way too dangerous for modern roads. One year may seem like a lifetime when you're 16 but 125cc is well worth the wait! Get him a decent peddle bike till then :)

He's 16. Ignore the other boring helmets, the A19 is a challenge on a 50 but if he learns to command his area he'll be ok.

He'll have to pass a CBT (compulsory basic training) first.

It's been about 10 year since I did my bike test but back then I did my CBT with the rider training place in Southwick. From what I remember the CBT basically entailed a bit of a lecture then riding a 125cc bike around the Stadium car park for a bit then a ride down to the beach and back. Might have changed a bit now like
What about the Highway Code bit too or is that just the test?
Death and robbery on wheels too
