How old are the kids? I'm out of touch with the latest upmarket shopping centres which may well offer fantastic facilities for kids but it might be worth considering a trip out to Central Plaza down on Bangna-Trad which has a rooftop waterpark and a small fairground on the top floor. Just across the highway is the Royal Dragon which was in the Guinness Book Of Records as the largest restaurant in the world, probably isn't now. Decent food, not too pricey, and plenty of entertainment for the kids, from the live seafood, roller-skating waiters, waiters coming down highwires carrying bowls of rice (bizarrely to the Hawaii 5-0 theme!) and a Thai cultural dance/music show. Harder to find, on the same side as Central Plaza is the Flying Chicken restaurant where your barbecued chickens are catapulted on to the spiked helmets of the unicycling waiters!! (I'm not making this up!!). There used to be a shuttle bus to Central from On-Nut Skytrain when that was the end of the line and I would guess there is something similar from Bangna or Udom Suk BTS stations, or a short taxi ride.

A bit further out of town is the Samut Prakan Crocodile Farm and Zoo. Good for photos with chimps and tigers and if you're lucky you might get to watch something like this!

If that is strictly upheld I will eat hay.

It tends to be upheld by all the major stores and bars with even the smaller shops and the majority of Thai owned bars not taking the risk because the police tend to be out in force trying to find anyone who does not comply.

Aye, my experience ( election days) is that it is upheld ... Even though the coppers own most of or profit from the bars in some way or another.

I suppose I should just have said that sale & consumption of alcohol is banned for 2 day. Bars can open if they want to keep their kitchens busy, although most of the smaller bars just pack up for the 2 days

It a big buddhist couple of days so the ban will be strictly enforced, not like election days

Not a problem for us that live here, if we want it we can get it. Just thought I'd post just in case any tourists were here and caught short for a beer on Thursday

That was what I meant about it not being strictly enforced. If I can't get a beer at one of my usual places (shops you sit outside at the tables) I will eat hay. I can see it happening in tourist areas. Although big hotels with foreigners are exempt according to that link anyway.

I thought no one down here even knew about it. I asked a few people yesterday and they had no idea what I was talking about. But this morning all the school kids were marching through town. At the start of each class/school (not sure which) was an open backed pick up truck. What was on each ranged from a large orange candle with nothing else to a king and queen sat on a throne. No monks though but there was part of the parade where they carried pictures of the king and queen. Then one lad in a class spotted me abs shouted hello and waved so I replied. Que 30 school kids all shouting hello and waving at the white bloke. I had to then respond for ages. The teachers at the back were pissing themselves laughing but trying to keep a bit if decorum

I've loved Thailand and Vietnam. I hated cambodia. I've still got to get to Laos but have another month or so (providing the bank doesn't catch up with me).
Laos's beautiful mate. Luang Prabang is real nice, good waterfalls, real nice people etc... Vang Vieng is fun for tubing and there's some decent spots if you hire a moped and head out of town (bit bumpy mind)! Not sure how you're getting to Laos, but DO NOT get the overnight "sleeper" bus! Worst night of my life.

Ao nang was lovely. As was koh lanta

This. Emirates have it all nailed in dubai. They know where you're going and they get you there
Go to Kwan's Cookery restaurant when you were there? Favourite food place in all of Thailand!

I'm not sure how I'm getting there yet. What's wrong with the sleeper bus? I caught it in Vietnam and it was OK there.

Because it's not a sleeper bus ha! It's just a standard coach (or it was in our case) nout like the Sinh tourist sleepers round Vietnam and Cambodia! If you're up near Chiang Mai when you head over catch the boat - takes like 2 days down the Mekong but heard real good things! Or just fly, the roads are appalling in Laos. The inter-country trips aren't too bad in a minibus but take about 6 hours...

I think I fancy the boat trip. Getting up to chang Mai just to do the boat trip sounds a maybe. Otherwise flight then. I'm not sitting on a normal bus for hours.

If there is any visitors in Thailand now, remember the bars are shut Thurs & Fri
I know. I'm gutted

Will they start selling alcohol tomorrow at midnight?

I just bought some. Didn't even want it. It's in the fridge. I just wanted to see if the ban would be applied in non tourist places. I'd let you have a few cans mate but it's a bit far.
