IPL style franchises for English cricket?

Not just football rivalries here either, rugby league too. Wakefield and Castleford are riddled with Leeds United fans, but the RL supporters in those towns, as well as Bradford, Huddersfield and Hull would be just as hostile towards the idea of a Leeds franchise as any Huddersfield Town, Sheffield United/Wednesday or Bradford City supporter.

As has been said, I just don't see how city teams would attract a bigger following than a team representing a whole county
Call me daft but I think this is being promoted by southerners.

They don't understand the difference between the North and the South. Northerners are more local in their identities. Liverpool/Manchester, similar for Yorkshire and and for the North East.

One thing people maybe don't realise (I think) is that these are *franchises*, if they do it the same they won't be based around counties and they will be able to recruit from anywhere in the country with a couple from overseas and it's basically chequebook rules.

It should be neither Newcastle or Sunderland. Neither of those cities are in County Durham. County Durham has its own city, it is called Durham. The future of the franchise would be in jeopardy if they decided to call it Newcastle as it would alienate a large element of the county's support
I totally agree, but i certainly hope Durham don't miss out because of a name and local petty politics. I support Durham to watch local lads get a chance to play cricket at 1st class level and the odd one to play international cricket. I don't give a toss if they are from Durham Northumberland or even now Cumbria. That was the whole point of the county gaining 1st class status in the first place. But if they miss out i fear they will be back in the minor counties within 10 years.

There will be a franchise in the north east without doubt. For it to be successful, it just needs to be called Durham. Even if there wasn't a franchise, I don't think it would affect Durham's position in county cricket. The county has produced several players in the past few years for the England team so their position would be well protected

Within 10 years there will be no county format as we know it today and all domestic cricket will be stream lined with a maximum of 10 sides, they may not even be counties. The franchise system of domestic t20 is the start of it. Cricket in this country can no longer support 18 professional sides there is neither the finance or the number of players produced by the counties of a sufficient standard to keep it going. Personally if Durham are not there at the start i would be worried about their future and if it is because of domestic squabbles about a name that would be a tragedy.

I think this is wrong.

County cricket hasn't been self-financing for decades and needed to be supported by Test match cricket and then television. What is different now? I'll answer that question, the only difference is that there's a competitor T20 which generates more money, mostly in India and Australia.

But county cricket can continue as it is, indefinitely but for the fact that greedy eyes want a bigger share of the available cash.

What CC does is create and nurture the players. Without CC the players just wouldn't come through, fewer players would play and overall quality would diminish. I just don't think the argument that you hear of let's have fewer teams and fewer games and therefore fewer players and the standard would improve. It just doesn't make any sense to me.

Whether its right or whether its wrong, whether its called Newcastle or Durham; quite simply we have to be in this or the NE would have its voice diluted in cricket.

Having said all this I wouldn't be too disappointed if "Yorkshire" were to stop playing T20. We might as well not bother anyway with our consistent poor performances year after year

Sunderland is in Co. Durham especially sporting wise. Fuck tyne & wear.

If there's a franchise up here it should be called Durham. Any other name and I won't be renewing my membership.

It won't be included in county membership though. The franchises will be completely separate to the county clubs

Call it North East United or something if they have to and no one will care.

Call it Newcastle then it will get a hell of a lot of people pissed off.

another of my fears.

i could see this fab new crap t20 idea destroying county cricket, as mentioned, it won't be part of the cc system, it will just mean that the existing counties will have their pockets drained of a massive part of their revneue - the t20 gates.

Why give the teams city based names anyway?

Why not just have an identity like Scorchers or Dolphins? It could work.

It wouldn't though, it would go into a central ECB pot and filter back into the game just like England revenues.

I'd not like to go if it's Newcastle, I only would only think about it if there were Durham players involved or there were some big names playing for either team. I can't see it happening though it should either be Durham or North East followed by a stupid last name.

Agree with this like. Clearly a bit of maturity and compromise is needed otherwise we will miss this great opportunity for no reason other than daft pride and tribalism.

This is bigger than petty Sunderland/Newcastle rivalry. Let me make this suggestion : North East Black Cats.

Reminds me of the time John Hall bought Durham Wasps and moved them to Newcastle. It was the death knell of North East ice hockey. Still miss The Big Blue Machine.

I hope he rots in hell for that. Geordie bastard. NE Ice Hockey is basically f***ing non existent now and it all stems from that moment.

North East Numpties?
