Your CPU isn't that bad to be honest, but your GPU is very poor. You'll need not only a higher capacity PSU, but one that is better quality to be able to support a better graphics card.

You're faced with the issue where you'll be spending more on the system upgrade than that system is actually worth.
It would make more sense to save for a new system.

I'm having a hard time finding out which PCIe version it uses, so install GPU-Z here: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
And let us know what number appears here:

We can take it from there.

PCI-E 2.0 X 16 @ 16 2.0

Thanks for the advice so far, really appreciate it!

You should get a good bump from a second hand Radeon HD 7850 (dual if you can find one for £50) and a good 500-550w PSU.

This chart shows which brands and product ranges are poor, average and great. It's surprising which well known brands make shit PSUs and brands you've never heard of who make world class PSUs. Pay as much as you are happy with to advance you up the quality chart.

Okay I've had a gander and it seems there are loads of different types of Radeon HD 7850s so my mind is a little frazzled! Could you possibly recommend me one? Same goes for a PSU! Ideally I'd like the total upgrade to cost no more than £100 - maybe £125... if that's possible?

I appreciate the help! :D

Also would it be worth paying the extra few quid for the 7870?

7850 - Just get one that agrees with your wallet.
PSU - Get any 500-550w PSU on this chart as good as you can afford. http://i.imgur.com/tgrbCnr.jpg

Check relative performance differences on that chart, then check the differences in prices on eBay.

It's really up to you now mate and what you can afford.
Link them here when you find them and we'll take a gander.

Bidding on this right now. If I can get it for around £80 I'll be happy. I'll have to take a look at my own PSU. I remember replacing one but I honestly can't remember if it was for my old machine or new one. The replacement was a 500w unit so I may not need a new PSU. If I do I have seen them for around £50.

I'll know by tomorrow if I won the GPU!

I never buy second hand pc parts off ebay. He has a no returns accepted. I know he has 100% positive but I'd be put off by the no returns.

I'm inclined to agree, you hear of people have things come in dead on arrival from the retailer or even the manufacturer, wouldn't trust something potentially wrapped in 3 layers of bog roll and stuffed in a jiffy envelope. You also have no next to no idea about how the seller has treated the card and it is difficult to tell.

Not all will be bad but it only takes one.

There's absolutely no point paying for a new item on an old system like that. If the item does not work you are covered by eBay regardless of whether he accepts returns.
I've just done it myself.

Cheers mate... how would I find this out? I can work out the PSU thing, I fitted a new one on my old machine a few years ago, but don't want to splash out on another GPU if it aint compatible :(

Fwiw someone on another forum has run gpu-z on the same motherboard and come back saying it's 16x 2.0.

So I've bought the Radeon 7870 :D

Checked my PSU and its this one...

AMD reckon I need a 500w PSU.. The one I've got is 450w but 500w peak. Do you reckon that will be enough? If its not and I try it, will it cause damage to the system?

I'd be getting a new PSU like - the ones in pre packaged PCs tend to be awful. I'd go for at least a Bronze certified 600w - you don't want your new Gfx card going bang ;)

I'll revise my power reccomendation a little actually - if the Gfx card says it needs 500w, then your probably safe with that. That will be their worst case scenario; your proabably going to be using more like 400w. That said, i still wouldn't be pushing a crappy 450w PSU up to near it's max power; i'd still buy a new one.

You've already been advised 3 times about this mate. :D
With PSUs you want a little extra room in wattage. Not to mention cheap PSUs are often nowhere near their advertised wattage rating. So it's possible you have only have an effective 350w PSU which could blow and kill all of the components in your computer.

Yes it implies I buy second hand parts from other places ffs
Does it fuck and you know it.. Jesus man you on the rag?

Haha areet man!

New PSU on the way then :p

I always knew you were a hut botherer, you look the type.
Okay so I invested in the EVGA 650W G2 GOLD 80+
It's listed in the top category on that link you sent and it was only £8 more than a really good 550w in the category below so I thought the extra would be worth it in case I upgrade again :D

That is a really fantastic PSU in every way. You'll be able to use it from system to system.
