You haven't got a point though. We've got until the end of next month to bring quality in, if we haven't brought quality players in before then you will have a point.

You are correct, we do have until the end of next month to bring quality in. My scepticism, based on previous experience, has me concerned because Advocaat has indicated that 5-6 quality players are needed for immediate inclusion in the first team, which, when allied to his conclusion that SAFC's previous transfer activity has been excessive, suggests that Coates and Matthews are likely to be considered to be part of the 5-6 quality improvements. More of the same of this quality level as this and SAFC will continue to act as a holding pen for bang average footballers.

We don't even know if we were genuinely after him, seems like we enquired and didn't think he was worth the money. Those going on about him signing for the Mags and suggesting it's because they are the bigger club, your buying into exactly the reasons it's being reported as it is.
Also those saying because he knows Dick, we should get him and if we don't it shows lack of investment/ambition whatever. What if it's Dick saying he isn't worth the money. It's not impossible that exactly because he does know him he knows what he's worth.
Dick came back on the back of being promised money to buy good players, I'm pretty sure if promises aren't made he will just walk. We need him more than he needs us at the moment.
Until Dick starts making noises that are negative I'm going to wait and see.

Why are people going mental over a player they have probably never seen play?

Who gives a fuck?

Far too many crocodile tears being shed over newspaper speculation (or lack of it). It's a big world out there and SAFC are keeping their cards close to their chests. Our success or failure does not depend on signing this particular player and to drone on about it is frankly ridiculous. Somewhere there is a player who is twice as good as Wijnaldum for half the fee. Maybe we might find him this time.

Don't worry mate, it's pointless as there's nothing you can do about it. The thing is, the way the PL is there's a couple of glass ceilings in place so mid table is about as good as it can get as things stand. I'm sure Dick will steer us to the promised land of 9th-15th

My concern does not extend to being worried and I accept that as fans all we have is interest and not influence, hence our sharing our opinions on message boards, rather than writing to Short/Byrne/Congerton, demanding that 'Something must be done', possibly written in multi-coloured crayons, to ensure it gets noticed.

I do not agree that there are any "... glass ceilings in place so mid table is about as good as it can get as things stand" In a system where every participant gets three points for a win and one for a draw, progress is possible for any club who wins more and loses less. In order to win more/lose less, a club needs to be able to routinely field a team populated by players who are of a higher quality than their opponents. Those higher quality players are available via the transfer system to any club who is willing to pay the asking price. My concern (not worry) is that SAFC do not seem willing to pay the asking price and that this is not solely based on the 'cheap as chips' acquisitions of Coates and Matthews, but rather the fact that it has become 'the SAFC way' over several seasons.

Incidentally, I'd be really happy if SAFC finished in ninth place next season. I'd be fairly happy if we finished 15th, so long as we played some attractive, entertaining and competitive football in doing so. At present, my expectation is of another dour, 'backs to wall', long hard slog of a season.

You've put 2+2 together and come up with 5.

Also, the worrying on a thread which has turned into Newcastle possibly signing a player is ridiculous. Advocaat is quoted as saying he had a very positive meeting with ES and that he is being backed in order to get his targets in.

Anyway even the EC is saying mags havent even tabled an offer never mind swooped !!

you're full-spectrum autistic, aren't you?

The only player there that I either agree we should have been in for or believe we could have got is Ayew. Holtby had a successful loan spell in Germany last season after generally being poor in England, that move made complete sense for him. Podolski would choose a club like Galatasary over us every day of the week. Ings isn't a free transfer, the fee will be set by tribunal. If you believe the papers, Richards chose Villa over us even though we offered higher wages because he was a Villa fan as a kid and his family are in Birmingham. There's no chance is pay £8M for a player who is no better than PVA.

Good point about Ings, he was a free transfer, but a compensatory fee will now be appended because of his age - I think that any Premier League club would be able to bear the cost of the fee. The decision for Ings to make would come down to wages and his and any prospective club's ambition. We need to be willing to compete against other clubs in this regard and not take our selves out of the game because we think that we can't compete.

With regard to Mings, the question is not whether he is better than van Aanholt, but rather whether he is a better long-term prospect than the ageing Brown and O'Shea or, for that matter, Coates. The fact that he is left-sided and can cover the left-back berth is a persuasive bonus that should have had the established Premier League club SAFC trumping the up-start Bournemouth.

I completely understand where you are coming from I just can't see Advocaat taking the job on unless given assurances that quality players will be brought in. After watching his interview on safc.com he still sounds upbeat.

He might have got them infact I bet short has given those very same assurances to people like min, fact is we ain't got bucket loads of cash and players don't want to come here. We see it with every manager they have their hit list with their choices etc by the end of the window they are down to choice four five six as reality sets in players don't want to come here be it because of the North East or more certain because we sack managers and struggle every season.

That will be ignored marra. Its like people think they aren't trying to get players in. Helmets.

Advocaat is the trump card really IMO. If he can't entice players up here then I doubt anybody can
