You called him gash, he's not.

He's a very good, reliable county bowler

That's how I would describe all their bowlers to be honest, they are all decent, but none of them stand out.

But if you combine that with their batting lineup, which is do indepth, they are a very good side.

If Onions was his normal self I would say our bowling attack was stronger

Rushworth certainly better than their lot IMO

Hi guys, yet another yorkie joining your forum.

A lot has been said in this game about the lack of quality in the durham batting, not just in this game but in general and in particular why it seems you always do better in the second innings.

On Monday when your lads came out to bat, they did not at anytime take account of the match situation and batted 'normally' I suspect this is what they do in most games. Your batsmen are naturally attacking and do not play with enough discipline for example playing outside off stump when our lads were leaving the ball alone. Good examples of this was rocky getting out in first innings trying to cut a ball that was far too close to off stump, a typical one day shot and he ended up chopping it onto his stumps.

Compare this to our performance. We scored at little more than 2 an over in the first two sessions of the match, why do you suppose that is...where we negative? boring? no. I was there and can tell you that you bowled as good a spell those first 2 sessions that i think i have ever seen. Had we worried about the low score rate, we would have been more aggressive and no doubt lost another wicket or 2.

without our backs to the wall ultra defence the lunchtime score could very easily have been 80-5. That would have meant that bressie and jonny would have come together before the pitch settled down and would probably have gotten out before they got going. Result, we could very easily have been all out for 150 or so. This was not a one day game and it was far more important to us to keep wickets in hand so that when the conditions improved (around 3pm) we would still be batting and have a chance of a decent score. Yet if you look at the first few pages of this thread we were accused of being boring. That is the nature of first class cricket.

Both the Durham innings were on a good wicket, but you were outdone by our consistent bowling, being determined not to get bogged down (unlike we did) your guys hit out, got the scoreboard moving but unfortunately for you also got the wickets column moving tool

Second innings when rashid was getting good turn, Colly square cut a length ball to the boundary, tried it again an over or 2 later and got the same result, the durhams applauded generously saying thats the way to play rashid, but then he tried it again and was caught at slip for 20, really not the way to play when you are trying to save a match.

But then almost unbelievably Richardson came on and only the third ball received tried to cut rashid the same way as he saw his captain getting out. Fortunately for him, this ball did not turn and he got his first boundary from the shot, and of course generous applause from the crowd.

Yesterday, knowing there was a fielder at fine leg, knowing that rain was due, and he might only need to survive another hour or 2 when he got a short pitched ball to hit, what did pringle do? straight down fine legs throat who did not have to move. Why on earth would a first class cricketer do that, why not just sway out of the way and knock another minute off the time still needed to bat....I mean do they not dish out brains in Durham?

On a good wicket with really only 3 hours to bat you should have easily saved the game but played with no brain as though this was the first day of the match. You need to adjust more for varying match conditions.

You have a good team, that could yet become a great team, if only your batsmen would learn to use their brains before bat!

Only a theory but in second innings when the game is more defined and the batsmen have a more defined target, ie get a lead of 300 then we should win, they concentrate more, this is the business end of the match, and this attitude tends to score them more runs.

The attitude of your batsmen against the best side in the county was poor, however, their style is a double edge sword and in last weeks match you would not have had time to beat sussex had you had batted as cautiously as you should have done this week So really, the attributes that caused you so much embarrassment this week, is the same attitude that has seen you win 6 of the preceeding 8 games.

At times, when we are playing weak opposition I could tear my hair out at the painfully slow way we can score and this was very instrumental in you beating us to the 2013 title. We were too scarred of losing in order to try to win, if you understand what I mean, while Durham just went at it gung ho and it really paid off for you.

Scarborough in 2013 you scored at a great rate and that again gave you the time you needed to bowl us out twice.

Disentangling what you've said here I think you have actually praised them.

ie If Onions was his normal self then our bowling attack would be stronger, the fact is that Onions is not his normal self so their attack must therefore be the stronger one.

Added to that of course is Rushworth didn't collect many skalps as in fact none of our bowlers did. Of course if Coughlin had been fit we may have done better but then Harrison didn't exactly disgrace himself.

Summing up, their attack was better than our attack and our attack is supposed to be nigh on the best in County Cricket, that must mean that by County Cricket standard at least they are more than decent.

Excellent appraisal about our batting and what Colly said a little more precisely. Nor can Durham cite inexperience given that the Yorkshire line up has more youngsters than Durham. There's no shame getting a good hammering providing you learn from it.

For the return game is anyone heading down to Scarborough? Probably going to go down for the Friday and Saturday.

Agree with everything you've said about our batting during the game. I know I bleat on about Stoneman but he needs to learn this and he will push on and score more 100s guaranteed. At times we need to understand the match situation whilst a lot of the time we think we're in 50 over 1 day mode.

That's right. The good thing seems to be that Stoneman agrees, he's been quoted in the Chronicle saying he needs to learn not to go too hard too quickly.
