Has anyone ever done this for camera equipment?

As I've mentioned on here before, I dropped my camera a while back and snapped two mounts on the chassis of the camera. I fixed it with superglue and it seemed to hold but while away using my tilt shift, while shiting the lens they snapped off again. It obviously needs a new chassis but they don't seem to be available to buy, even direct from Sony even if I could find someone to carry out the work.

Potential issue is that the camerais a grey import and I'm 99% I no longer have the receipt (I'm rubbish at keeping things like that)

question is really is how in depth do the insurance companies want to go before they'll pay out.

I've already checked and I have un-named items up to 5k covered, inside or outside the house and even abroad, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As long as your insurance states you are covered I can't see the problem. It was an accident so you should be covered. They will probably want to see the camera AND the purchase receipt. Don't think the fact it is a grey import would matter. I think that is only for warrant issues. I may be wrong with the grey import bit though, just how I understood it. My 5D3 is a grey import.

Let me know what the part is - I will have mooch here in China (you can buy everything) and if I find it I can get it for you, back in the UK in July for a couple of weeks.

That's very kind of you mate but even if I found the part I wouldn't have a hope on hell in fitting it.

Taken it to bits and only one of the mounts has snapped. May try gluing again and be a bit more gentle......and use more glue

I dropped my elderly Canon 300d in the kitchen - it stopped doing anything ...contacted the insurance co and it was confirmed my policy was new for old ...they sent a guy out to look at the camera and I was asked to take it into Chas Eagles in Durham who sent it to an official Canon repair centre ..(who said it wasn't repairable) ....I was asked if I wanted a new Canon 600D as it was the nearest modern equivalent of my 300D or a voucher for Currys (for about £600) to pick what I wanted...no complaints from me about the insurers!

bowled over by Direct line. Logged the claim 20 minutes ago, told them the circumstances, told them where I bought it (grey) had to pay my excess but asked me if I wanted cash or a new camera. Told them I wanted a new camera and they're sending one from their supplier (WEX - UK stock) and I should receive in 3-5 working days. Told me to keep the old camera until I receive the new then I can hoy it if I want.

Result! Hoy it the bay of E! bound to be someone who will want it for parts or summit.
Guy I know was at St Marys with 5dmk2 on his tripod, big wave came in and he stepped back out of the way, his tripod fell over with camera and lens on it under water, his insurance company replaced it with 5dmk3 and new lens, even though the mk2 was still available in shops. Insurance can be great.
