Microadjustments

I've just spent a bit of time this afternoon making some microadjustments to my lenses. Most of my lenses only needed a little tweak of +/- 1, but my 70-200mm needed -7 wide, and +5 telephoto adjustments. Beginning to wonder whether I've done it right at all. I'll give it a try in the real world tonight and see whether there's a noticeable difference.

Anyone else had to make such huge corrections?
 


I've had significantly bigger adjustments than those, BUT they have been in the same direction at both ends of the zoom.

A calibration between your lens and the camera. You find sometimes a lens will consistently front/backfocus when you analyse the shot in detail. A microadjustment in the camera will make the lens focus a bit further forward/backwards to make sure the right spot is in focus that you want.

That's a pretty rubbish explanation actually, best off just Googling it ;)
 
Its fine tuning of the autofocus on a lens/body combination as the focus is rarely spot on due to manufacturing tolerances.

The adjustment is actually made on the camera, which remembers the adjustment for each lens. Certainly with Canon, you have to go to the higher range SLRs to get this feature, it isn't available on the cheaper models. I don't know if the same is true of Nikon/Sony etc or not.

Things look OK. A nightclub probably isn't the best place to judge because I do a lot of: autofocus->switch to manual->re-frame due to the low light. I'll try get a chance in the next few days to give it a whirl. I just felt at Ultra Music Festival I was trying to focus on the artists and they came out quite blurry even at 1/200 which shouldn't really happen.
