Running Thread 2015

Nice steady 15k this morning, in 1 hour 10 and an average of 4mins 41seconds per km.

Feel like I'm getting back to a good level of fitness.

I would have if I never have London.

Morning runs, I tend to have water and a bag of haribo, the small multi pack size. I prefer to sleep rather than get up and prepare myself. I tend to eat quite late anyway, 8pm and after so generally I'm not hungry.

That's a point; my evening meal is usually after 8pm, sometimes as late as 9 or 10pm so I'm not as hungry in the morning as I might be.

I still eat though.

Me too! I only started running again 4 weeks ago, and the furthest I've ran so far is just under 5K. I'm going to try and run a bit further in the morning and see how I go.

When do people eat for early morning runs? I usually have a meal around 5.30-6pm, then I don't eat anything else as evening eating makes my Crohns symptoms play up. On weekends, I'm getting up around 7am and having a glass of water then going straight out running. Is it ok running after 12+ hours without food, or should I be having a protein shake before bed or something before I go out?

Running without eating is the whole point of morning runs for me.

I cannot eat anytime within about 4 hours of running our I feel it on my gut all the way around, I love morning runs as there mostly slow for me but I feel great without food in me, my 17.1 mile last week was on a empty stomach, Shirley if you have ate properly the day before the body has enough fuel not to conk out our damage you in anyway??? Is there any evidence on eating v not eating 1st thing before morning runs and which one is supposedly the best as I am to lazy to even google it

I read an article last year that said exercising in a fasted state increases our growth hormone production & gets the body to switch from burning carbs to burning fat much earlier in the run. I think it was in Runners World but I'm not certain.

Interesting that if true, I've been shedding the weight in the last year from 13.2 to 11.13, the 2years running before that nothing seemed to move off me, but I do a lot more mornings now than before, it might just be the number of miles increase that has shifted them pounds and nothing to do with morning runs but I will never know I expect.

Just finished 10 mile on 1hr 33 this afternoon. Ran from horden to hawthorn then headed into the dene, all the way to the coast then all the way back along to horden along the cliffs via Easington. Pleased to get some miles under me belt down that was as it forms part of the Durham coast half marathon route

Did my first ever trail race in the lakes yesterday. Was a canny day. Did it in 1hr 20 which is good for me. Could do with some more hill work tho as the mile climb up the coffin trail was too much for me to run up all the way. And it turned out to be 12k!

3.85 miles again this morning in 47.07. Slightly slower than yesterday but I didn't sleep well last night and I really struggled with belly cramps between miles 1 and 2.
3.85 miles more than I've done today. Got all my gear out last night but no energy this morning. In the past I would have just got myself out there but now I'm second guessing whether the lack of energy is related to my hospital visit so don't risk it. Sooner or later I'm just going to have to go for it and if I crash and burn, so be it.

well done on getting out there! I got around park run yesterday in 42 mins, such a rubbish time. My legs felt like lead & i had to walk quite a bit, i didn't feel like I was picking up any stamina until the last mile. The hills didn't help either!!

Best to get yourself well first and take it easy at first xx

Don't focus on the time. At least you got out there and did it. That's a lot better than all the people who were in bed nursing hangovers etc ;)

I had the heavy legs and lots of walking when I first started back but it's getting a bit easier now.

How many pairs of running shoes do you have ?
I've always just had one pair that I use for everything , but was talking to couple of club runners last week and they seem to have 4-5 pair that they rotate for different training etc AND a pair for races !!! So I'm now thinking , is that the norm ?
Do I need , say 3 pair , one for slow and easy running , one for faster training and one just for races ?!! There's blokes in the 70s that were doing everything in Dunlop green flash !
What do you do ?

A cheap pair that I got when I first started running and didn't want to spend a lot in case I didn't like it. I just wear them for exercising in the house now.

A pair of trail shoes for the routes that are mainly rough ground over fields.

Pair of Asics Gel Noosa's mainly because I fell in love with the bonny colours but they're better for routes mainly involving roads and tarmac paths.

I once had a sole split just before the Great North Run & didn't manage to get a decent run in the new pair before the event & my feet ended up blistered to hell. Since then I always have at least 2 pairs on the go. As soon as I get 250 miles in 1 pair I start using a new pair for shorter runs & changing their predecessor up to longer runs so there's no chance of it happening again.

Normally have 3 on the go (4 including spikes). Usually use one for racing. Nearly all my racing is on the road so i don't have any trail shoes.

I know some lads who have more trainers than there wives' have shoes though :)
