Striker
..Just been announced:

Michael Clarke (c), Steve Smith (vc), Fawad Ahmed, Brad Haddin, Ryan Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Shaun Marsh, Peter Nevill, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, David Warner, Shane Watson.

Pretty much what you'd expect really, never heard of Peter Nevill though. Will be interesting to see if they go with four seamers at some grounds and just leave Lyon out altogether; you'd think Starc and Johnson will play every game if fit, then it'll be a case of choosing between Harris, Siddle and Hazlewood. Because Siddle is such a workhorse he'd probably play in a side with four seamers, and they might just play Harris one game and then rest him the next; he's class but ancient and falling to pieces these days. Strong squad.

I actually think this series will be better than people think. There is a lot of negativity around our ODI performance, and rightly so. We haven't however, become a bad test side overnight. In home conditions we have bowlers who will swing the ball, and the Aussies albeit full of lads who can belt a long ball, will face a different proposition when it is hooping round corners with 4 slips and 2 gullys in.

Have a feeling this could be a thriller of a series, 3-2 either way. We are always a highly competitive test nation, we view it (and rightly so) as the pinnacle of the greatest sport on earth. Aus are the best side in the world in their own conditions, and in similar conditions like SA. But away from home they are far from perfect, they lost their last oversees series in Pakistan.

Our bowlers are always a handful at home, Jimmy will be a different animal, Broad likewise. Also the Aussie batsmen simply do not move their feet, when it hoops around they struggle.

Whilst the Aussies will have a serious bowling line up, pace is not as important over here as swing, I doubt the pitches will be lightening fast, our bowlers will swing it more. Starc has yet to prove himself at test level; cant wait for this series!

Looks like a conservative squad picked to play in English conditions. Surprised they have left out their young genuine quick bowers like Pattinson and Cummins.
Englands problem is they can't prepare low slow turners like they did in 2013 as we don't have Swann anymore. If the ball swings the Aussies will smash England especially if Ryan Harris can stay fit for at least 3 matches.

From a county cricket point of view there are some cracking players not in the squad who will be looking to play over here. James Faulkner would be an excellent overseas player. I would imagine he will end up somewhere after the IPL.

Pattinson has a hamstring injury, but Rod Marsh said he could be added to the squad later.

Starc, Hazlewood and Johnson can all bowl 90mph+, not sure why they'd need another genuine quick when Harris and Siddle have tons of experience in English conditions. Maybe they could've done away with Ahmed, but that's a great set of seamers they've got there.

Spot on and they all swing the ball as well. I think they have gone for Siddle as a backup for Harris who probably won't be able to play 5 tests in such a short time. Not normally the Aussie way to go back to someone they have discarded. I did not think they would select two batting/meduim pace allrounders in Watson and Marsh and gone for another fast bowler.

The thing is oversees bowlers sometimes come over here and swing it as good as us,it's not as though they don't know what the art of swing bowling entails, plus they've also got a big edge in pace which we tend not to relish.
I suspect we're in for another mauling.

Looks like a good squad, as expected. Let's hope we have plenty of computer analysis ready and can look to "execute our plans"

I suspect we are too. Moores is out of his depth as an internatioal coach and the whole thing seems kind of Sunderland AFCesque ATM.

Agree with this, I don't get all this negativity about our Test team. To me we're a very good side at home and I actually think we'll win back the Ashes this summer.

What's more, I think the visit of NZ will be a real challenge and excellent preparation for the Aussies.

I think a lot of the players will be out of their depth as well.
I honestly dnt think we've planned very well for people comign to the end of their careers. Not only that but the perennial question of how KP was handled and who replaces him hasnt yet bene fully answered. I look at the Australian team and I look at ours and they just look far better in all departments. If Anderson or Broad dont fire then whats plan B bowling wise? Stokes isnt a main strike bowler for example.

As far as Stokes goes i hope they are not going to bat him at 8 and think he is a front line bowler. Hopefully with Ali injured for the West Indies they will bat him at no6 and Rashid at no8.
As far as planning for the future, the simple fact is we don't have anyone coming through especially in the bowling that looks international class be it fast bowlers or spinners.. Thats why they are taking a punt on Mark Wood. When you look at the players the Australian domestic structure are producing compared to the counties it is worlds apart.
No doubt Moores talks in riddles with his management speil but if the players are good enough, as Shane Warne says "the coach is for getting to and from the ground"

Stokes is a first change bowler. He has a knack of taking wickets but he can be wayward too. I think that waywardness will pass though - he has a chance of becoming a very good bowler. imho

Is Stokes any/much better than Watson? Who will be fifth choice bowler for the Aussies.

The conditions pakistan play in are practically unplayable.......

To be fair to our bowlers their speeds were pretty good in the world cup. All around 145 KPH mark which is 90 MPH. A couple of the Aussies were hitting 150 KPH but that's only 93 MPH, hardly a big difference.

The biggest problems with our bowlers was they weren't getting much swing / seam and also their poor lines / lengths. I'm sure a red Duke ball will make a huge difference.
