Upgrade from ATI Radeon™ HD 5770 Graphics

I've been using this card for a few years now and it still runs all of the latest games, albeit not at max settings or framerates.

I'm looking to upgrade to something that is significantly better, but also a decent price.

Prerequisites:
  • Must be PCIe 2.0 (I know PCIe 3.0 is backwards compatible, but I'd be wasting performance)
  • Must give at least 2x the performance
  • Can be nVidia or ATI
  • Modern architecture that supports DX11 (and therefore DX12)
  • I dont want to break the bank as this system will need to be completely replaced soon. ~£100-120

Any suggestions?

More specifically PCIe 2.0 x16

It's mildly cheaper yeah.. But it's also only like 8% faster than the one I have already:

What's your maximum budget mate? You said in your OP £100 - £120. The 7850 will set to back £140 + for anything decent in that range more like £180 hence why I said the nvidia 760.

For a comparison using the site you used to compare the cards here's mine against the 7850.

It takes a shit all over the 7850 but it costs way way way more.

The 1GB 7850 cost just less than £100, with the 2gb one just over:

Yeah the 980 is way out of my price range for this system which I need to completely replace. By then I might get this:

That will probably be the next card I get. Looks like an absolute beast.

When are you planning on building your next rig?

Not for quite a while yet. Maybe 1-2 years. It will have to be a complete system as this one really can't be expanded much more.

What spec is the machine?

5770 implies the system is a good 4 years old now, so I wouldn't bother putting a top-line GPU in it.

I have a 7850 like you said. And I can run everything in pretty high modes. Second hand on ebay, you'll get one cheap as owt.

Edit: Very quick ebaying, you'll pay about £50.

Stick the other £70 on a 128Gb SSD. Install your OS, core apps, and the games you are actively playing on that.

I have an r9 270x runs a lot of stuff on ultra and can handle bf4 which is a killer. Decent cards and wouldn't be bad a newer system when you upgrade

Yeah it's an old system that was fantastic at the time, which is why it's still trucking.
Just like my PCIe 2 is a restriction for graphics cards, my SATA-300 interface is a limitation to adding SSD's
My whole system needs to be replace really, but I don't have a grand to do that atm.

SSD will still be quick mate and will give you that boost to bridge the gap for a new machine.

A 7850 will be perfect for you imo, as they are still mid-range, but old enough to be cheap. Might even get a special edition (more faster ram, OC etc) if you keep looking on ebay.

Could always buy a good aftermarket cooler and overclock your CPU too - and the cooler will work in your next machine. So not money wasted (Same story for the SSD of course!)
