Afghanistan's Bowlers

Are better than England's.

Discuss......

Atleast they're performing better. Watching them on against the Aussies and their openers are bowling a good line and length - keeping it full and tucking Warner/Smith up. Nice bit of swing too.

Dawlat & Shapoor > Broad & Anderson & Finn & Woakes

That would soon change once Saker got his hands on them, that and about 10mph lost in pace.

Worst decision ever by the ECB to get rid of Cooley for that numpty?!

fairly sure Cooley left of his own accord. And if I remember rightly (may be wrong) Allan Donald had the job in between as well.

edit - and Gibson

Probably should have given some more thought to my reply - ultimately what I was getting at is/was - once we had Cooley now we have Saker.

I think Cooley had a much better standard of bowler to work with in Saker's defence. Though Saker should be making bowlers better. The likes of Broad, Finn, Dernbach have eithet declined or not improved

And Kevin Shine.

Cooley's contract was allowed to run out at the end of 2005. By May 2006 he was snapped up by the convicts.

Another great ECB moment. He was the guru of reverse swing and taught it to Johnson.

Aye, under the coaching of that twat.

Finn was phenomenal when he came on the scene. A few years of a central contract and he was shit.

No argument from me....

Didn't they try to make Finn a pitch it up swing bowler? Sure I read that a while back.

I think Saker pointed the finger at Middlesex for that. Gus Fraser said England had messed around with his run-up to avoid clipping the stumps and it had destroyed his rhythm. Considering Finn returned to form very quickly at Middlesex, I think I am going to go with Middlesex on this one. Saker is a total f***ing spud.

Months ago I did wonder if Broad and Anderson would be affected by their operations. I recall that when Onions had his bad one several years ago he was out for a season and then bowled below par for antoher season before he really started to take wickets again.

Of course Broad and Anderson were only out for 3 months each compared to Onions' year, but still when I hear that they're not bowling with the same pace as during the summer I do wonder - and if that's right we can expect some improvement.

Another thing they seem to do is have a bowler's clique thing going on and they're both bowling too short on a regular basis - witness Lords last year when they were widely blamed and where the bowler who pitched it up (Stokes) returned better figures.

So is consistently bowling short a bowler thing or a coach thing?

Pretty sure that was deliberate as everyone was doing it (even Stokes for spells). There is a perception that sub continent batsmen love a nibble outside off stump.

Australia 417/6 - so much for the Afghan bowling attack. ;)

Anderson and Broad are Englands 1st and 3rd highest wicket takers in all formats.

Finns taken 202 wickets for England too so hardly a novice.

Only Anderson at his peak would get in the Ashes 05 side and the side that done so well prior to that series. Hoggard was supremely skilful in the same conditions as Anderson too

Broad would potentially get the nod over Hoggard as well. Better bowler in his prime and his figures bear that out. Take into consideration his batting and it's a no brainer.

That said, he's been ordinary in this World Cup, it's come too soon after his knee operation. Infuriating when you consider others have missed out.
