Floodlights @ Emirates ICG

I did the Lords tour a couple of years ago and the guide was saying that they had to build retractable ones in order to get planning permission. It might cost more but worth it if it means getting them

Lords are only allowed 1 or 2 day/night games to finish after 8/9pm per season (I think)

Lords never hosts International day/nighters now as they always finish too late..

I am gonna go against the grain here and say we shouldn't bother. Our climate simply doesn't suit day night cricket. I reckon we have about 4 or 5 nights per year where it would be an even contest, with no way of predicting when those days will be.

I definitely don't see international day-nighters coming our way, and am not suer it would even attract a huge number of local fans for Durham games either. I wouldn't fancy sitting down there with 5 layers on trying to keep warm.

Can't for my life understand why anyone would be against ground enhancements. Staggering
Assuming that is aimed at me, you are generalising quite a bit.

I am against spending a million quid on something I don't think is necessary. We live in the North East of England, where on numerous occasions, floodlit games have been a bit of a farce, with teams batting second being at a huge disadvantage with the ball moving around excessively. There is zero chance of an international floodlit game given this, and given the temperature at the riverside, domestic games would in my opinion be poorly attended.

I would like to see their Business Plan!

Not against them but when are they going to use them. Surely one of the advantages of cricket in the north east is that in June and July you can play cricket in natural light until 9pm easily so the lights would not be needed until the last 45 minutes . It would be to cold in April and May and counties play very little one day cricket at the start of the season. The only time i could see them being effective is the end of August or early September. Sadly i just don't think we have the climate.

I'm fully aware of where we live and the temperatures, though summer 2014 was very warm.

I want to see the ground enhanced and I want to see the ground tick the boxes for international criteria but also for other events which the ground is capable of hosting.

People whinge that the T20 starts at 5.30pm making it a rush to get to the ground after work, floodlights would enable at 7pm start which I would be massively in favour of.

I hope the club get to go ahead and I look forward to another phase of ground improvements happening at the club.

Sorry but this argument that there would be a substantial increase in people attending county matches if the times where different is pie in the sky. Durham has a die hard support of about 1000 who will turn up and watch anything, The vast majority will be at the University match at the start of April. You only have to look at the size of the crowd for the semi final against Notts which was played on a Saturday,it was largely made up of the regulars most who have been going for years. I don't think the appeal of sitting at the Riverside to watch day night cricket will appeal to a new audience.
Iam all for the cub being progressive but not sure foodlights would make any difference to the domestic game.

That was our biggest home gate of the season.

I never mentioned county matches

Haven't you heard, they're putting those new halogen heat bulbs in, I've heard they can be thermostatically controlled, so what with ample light and heat we could play all year round.

We will never get an international day/night game due to the climate you say you know all about!

Also we hold events such as concerts already. Not sure 6 beaming towers will be a deal breaker for getting Fleetwood Mac on as a Saturday turn.

We have a world class facility already in my opinion, and permanent floodlights will add very little to that. Fully agree with the other post that crowds will barely increase even under lights.

We must have some sort of guarantees from the ECB if they're looking to go ahead with this as the main thing they are pushing is to bring the ground up to international standard being the only test ground without them? Outside of this there's arguments for both sides. On average many times a year do we have to rent them and to what cost would be one thing worth knowing? Summer concerts are probably limited anyway due to the affects they may have in the playing surface and we do get late light nights for a good part of it.

A look at the business plan isn't a bad shout given the amount involved, especially given the money borrowed off the council recently or does this involve some of that money? As long as the club is in good shape financially then I think it does make sense in the long term although I don't think it has money to burn at present so is there to be value for money in their plans as the life of the County is the most important aspect of it all and I don't think that floodlights are a make or break decision in this.

Just a few thoughts like and who'd have thought we'd be debating floodlights at Durham's International Cricket Ground not too many moons back. What a headache to have!!!

I understand the argument that it's a lot of money for a few nights cricket. However I believe in the future floodlights will be needed for any ground to be classed as an International Ground.
If Lords did not have the floodlights in September then the Final we won would not of taken place due to bad light. I believe in the future the ECB will want to use the floodlights to guarantee a full day's play in test matches and will only play at grounds with lights.
If we want to keep the ground to "International Standard" then floodlights will be needed so let's keep ahead of the game instead of playing catch up. This area deserves the best so why not have it.

Ground qualifying criteria to host any 2019 World Cup games includes having floodlights.
T20 starting slightly later than 5:30 would suit me so hopefully others as well to boost attendance.
Residents association have arranged an EGM tomorrow to discuss the level of opposition. Ironically the meeting is at the cricket ground!

FFS. I wish theyd let it f***ing rest. The floodlights will probably be on 3 or 4 times a f***ing year.

Them miserable fucks still going on. Used to work with a lass with lived on Bradman Drive. She thought they were all crackers

They're the same as people who move next to pubs etc and then complain about the noise and people drinking outside. Wankers is the official name for them I believe.
Or them who move next to a local club cricket ground and kick up a fuss cos the ball keeps flying owa into their vicinity despite the fact the houses have been there a fraction of the time the cricket field has. A look out the window afore ye buy will give you a clue as to what the potential downsides may be. Bit like moving next to a motorway or an airport then complaining about the noise.

one ground for objection seems to be the fact DCC won't put street lighting on the Golf Course road in fear of upsetting the wildlife
