Running Thread 2015

Mine's a Forerunner 10 & if I try & set it off searching for a signal before I get outside sometimes it won't pick up a signal at all even if I get outside before it's finished. Never takes more than 90 secs if I start it off outside though so I just put up with standing about like a lemon.

Snap. Did a 5k the other day and the watch got signal with about 400m to go. Generally it's spot on though.

Think my running days are done. Two years of battling knee pain in both legs…atrhritis it seems. Don't blame the running, mind. Kept me sane for most of my life. Just age finally catching up.

Can still work out OK on the treadmill with a max incline and a very fast walk but as soon as i even try to jog the knees give out.

Been a good run - so to speak - all these years. Some great races along the way
Nightmare, I don't know what I would do without running. How old are you? Any stories?

58.

It is hard. I've started lifting a lot of weight these days..probably stronger than ever. But it is not the same. Was a track runner as a kid then got back into distance running when I hit 40. Loved it. Got my 10 k time down to 38.50 and always had a goal of running a sub one minute 400m after age 50 but didn't quite get there. Did run 21 marathons..last one in Stockholm almost 4 years ago..3.13 time. Very hard not beng able to get out on the trails, especially in winter. Used to love running in the parks when it dropped to minus 20c...just me and the coyotes, hour after hour.

Im with you Dan lad, take my running away and would be in the funny farm within months (not exaggerating either).. Training camp for Coast 2 Coast ultra starting in earnest this week, wont be able to do this stuff forever so want to do stuff to the extreme while still physically capable. Gutted for you jcrossan, but nobody can ever take away those achievements from you. Just 1% of the worlds population will ever run a marathon, you have knocked out 21 marra, be proud of what you have achieved.

Did the Sunderland 10k last year and enjoyed it, so to push myself this year I've entered the half marathon ! Currently doing 4 mile runs @8 min miles one month after starting again after my winter break. Going to start ramping it up again in a week or so.

Can you cycle or swim mate ? Know it's not the same but sometimes an injury can mean you discover another sport/ hobby? I was out for 14 months recently and was almost told I wouldnt run again and it does get you down especially when you know lots of runners but I tried to block it by swimming twice a week and was getting half decent at it .
Be a shame if you couldn't substitute the running with something else? It even crossed my mind to get into coaching as my youngest daughter is running now. You could pass your experience into younger runners?

Did a Slow run down seafront this morning, class going down but right pain running back into that wind. Passed DA and his merry men near Whitburn, lookin good Dan, the women in his group were all owa him mind

I thought that was you, you were wrapped up for the arctic. I managed ten before I got a pain in my knee, so decided to stop. How many did you do? Wind was brutal going towards shields.

I can still go on the treadmill and get a good workout if I set it on the highest incline setting and walk at a brisk pace. And I've sort of discovered weight lifting...but it's not the same. Haven't given up all hope of running again but it gets dispiriting once you start to even jog and the spin comes down. Live in hope...supporting Sunderland makes you good at that

Just read this.

Any other tips to getting back on track?
I know it's just common sense and I need to listen to my body. Also going to speak to the doctor on Wednesday.
Going to start with a walk tomorrow but feel like I'm going right back to square one. After training for the last two months with a specific (modest) time in mind for the half marathon, how do I reset my expectations to accept that finishing is my new target?
Even that may not be realistic but I want to get back into running as soon as it is safe to do so.

aye mate I was sweatin buckets , thought would be really cold but wasn't too bad, was just the wind that ruined it.
Did 11 mile which is the longest ive done in god knows how long, but could feel ankle from about 7mile so really I should have pulled up and walked to be on the safe side but I just wanted to get home.

Restless - need to bite bullet and take it really easy, maybes go out on the bike a few times before try running again ? If you miss the sland run maybes target a half marathon a few month later instead?

I was thinking of going to the gym and doing some light cardio stuff. Going to do nothing until I speak to the doc on Wednesday.

Stayed off my knee and back for a week and it's still giving me stick. Doing my head in, all I want to do is train and run, bored of training my arms and shoulders, too restrictive and don't feel like I've had a workout after. Need to feel sweat pouring out of me to feel like Ive worked out and only running and squats/deads do that for me.

I had a week off due to chest pains/asthma/cold but went out yesterday just to test the water did a 5k in the morning and 4 mile on the night, going out for a 7miler this afternoon then a 5k on the way home from work, all nice and slow for the time being until I feel spot on again

dunno if you are in the uk but how about LDWA events. people run or walk them, I believe the faster walkers are pretty competitive for first back to the finish.

think I may have asked this recently, BUT... do may runners on here do squats regularly ?
Thought it may help to strengthen my legs and assist with running , had hoped to do them maybes twice a week, did 4 sets of 10 yesterday and no way can I even do a light run today, hoping that its just that my body needs to get use to them and long term benefits will outweigh etc, otherwise can't see point if its going to stop me from running for a couple of days afterwards each time ?

1 legged squats and or lunges are better than straight squats although hill running is probably better again at building leg strength.

I posted a link to an article about a body builder who also does triathlons. He does all of the heavy work and sprints at the start of a week and then does a longer run at the end of the week.

Also why not do e.g. 5 sets of 5 reps instead of 4x10?

just curious as to what more experienced runners to do as I'm walking around today like I've shit my pants....

Archie - gonna try lunges, cheers.

I tend to run hilly routes rather than flat (as far as sunderland goes anyway) but have only tried a few specific hill repeat sessions, simply because of past Achilles problems, but I should probably start to do more. and I sometimes do XC training up farra.

p.s - itv4 tonight 10pm, documentary on Paula Radcliffe, maybe worth a watch.
