Does he protect the back four? He turns his back on areal balls and is rarely open for a pass when the centre halfs/keeper have the ball. We should be be looking for someone that does this as standard and can pass forward if we're not going to become a bottom 6 team really. I think dedicating a player to this roles holding us back personally.

Couldn't agree more, you need the player to be able to do more than just that, as Cattermole can.

Basically just sacrificing a player by having him doing that role. Why can't we just have a more defensive minded midfielder to do that role, rather than a player who can only do a very specific limited role, makes it so much harder for us to win games.

Fair point. The "Makelele response" is the obvious one but I think you're likely right that attacking improvement in that role is needed for comfortable mid-table.

I must have been watching a different game on Saturday because I thought Bridcutt and Gomez were really poor, especially Gomez bar his pass that led to the 2nd goal he gave the ball away far too much which nearly cost us a few times.
