It's a new game these days, you need modern cricketers opening
You know at one time I thought we were there, I mean when we had Trescothic and he was hitting boundaries from the off, I thought England had adopted to modern cricket the way the Aussies played it.

And then he left and wasn't replaced and we went back to openers who set themselves to grind it out. I mean look at Rocky of Durham, he'll hit a boundary whether it's first ball or whatever and he played the significant innings in the Lords one-day victory because he struck out and hit the boundaries and put his team ahead of the asking rate.

tbh, I've never been a fan of Cook, it's partly for no reason in particular but partly it's because when he first came into the team Geoff Boycott was a fan.

Sri Lanka started it in 1996 with Jayasuria, and we have never caught up.

It looks like Ali has decided he is gonna go and hit the thing which is exciting, if they pair him with Hales (and I'm not convinced) then potentially we have a partnership that gets us off to a flyer.

The key for me is the middle order, they need to be flexible enough to take us from 10/2 after 2 overs or 175/2 after 30.

I think Root and Taylor have the class to do both

Correct decision. Only issue I have is that this wasn't done at least prior to the Sri Lanka ODI series. Would've at least given the new incumbent a head start before World Cup.
Next correct call would be to get on the blower to KP and get him back in the fold.
Sadly this will never happen.
And Thank God it won't! If he actually went and played for Surrey instead of pissing about in Hit & Giggle leagues maybe i'd be on his side but while this isn't the case then I don't have an ounce of respect or symprathy for him.

I don't think our T/20 or the big bash are hit and giggle leagues anymore mind. They are big business and as seen with the T/20 World Cup very much part of the cricketing calender now.
I do however concede that KP should've played a lot more 4 day stuff and One day stuff for Surrey last season if he really wanted to put the squeeze on the ECB.
My view though is that he's a massive talent who as long as playing some form of cricket which he is, then he's still good enough to be part of our ODI set up.

Exactly mate remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch that Sri Lanka game, yet nearly 20 years later we still have not learnt what required at the top of the order while other countries do.

I think as a country we always take a age to catch on,look at football,Germany for example changed their whole system when their failed in a major championship years ago and have reaped the rewards, while for years all our fans talked about was showing more passion!

Do really think they were ever hit and giggle mate, just old fashioned cricket fans labelled 20/20 that because of their refusal to move with the times, people may not like it but the IPL is massive and IMO very watchable and excellent cricket skills on offer.

Said on this board many a time if done right there is defiantly room for all parts of the game in the cricket calendar
The skills you adapt in 20/20 cricket can only be good for our one day team.

Had a conversation with my Dad in the pub. He said Morgans record was as bad as Cooks. The fact is , Morgan could win a game on his own, yep, he hasnt done it for a while, but he can do it. Cook cant do that

Spot on and that is the big difference between the two

He averages 25 in 2014 yet has a ton and 3 50s. Cook averaged 27 yet only had one 50.
