But that would be that we need a different striker rather than another one. Personally I don't see much value in having three top level ones in a one up front system. I'd rather we brought a top quality player in out wide and just went with two senior strikers and used the youths to backfill. Either that or have three forwards all of whom were equally comfortable out wide or up front. Nemo has it right that we simply couldn't keep three strikers happy with where we are in our development unless one of them is being shoehorned in elsewhere.

Whilst both were exceptional finishers, if we were going to sign someone of that ilk (which I think is unlikely, please don't forget that SKP was not Reid's original target so we "hit lucky") then I would much prefer a version of the latter.

For a Bent type of player the whole team had to be set up to play to his strengths and tactics had to change if he was unavailable, whereas when Phillips couldn't play nothing about our playing style, really, had to change.

FFS how is then that every man and his dog including Stevie Wonder can see we have a decent defence a good midfield but absolutely fuck all up front then !!!!!!

We played our best football last season when we had no choice but to attack teams, we beat some f***ing good teams in that run in and got to the final. Then, back to shit football. Just f***ing have a go Gus, if we lose then at least we can say we tried.

I think we are trying to avoid a do or die scenario, IMO, like.
 
We need another striker, but not as much as we need more creativity/pace in the midfield. I don't know how much is going to be made available in January, but definitely need to solve the midfield first. Then we can worry about the striker.

But Fletcher and Wickham are both decent enough... there aren't many strikers outside the top 7 or so that are better finishers than Fletcher. Wickham is still raw, but is a good option to have. If we got a pacy, nippy option as an alternative that'd be alright.

But I don't think the reason we're not scoring is totally down to the strikers. We don't always create enough chances. Our full-backs currently limit our attack, as decent as they are... with inverted wingers, you need overlapping full-backs. Something as simple as that can make a huge difference.

Disagree. In our system we need a striker who has excellent movement. We currently do not have one.

Got to agree with this. Our Strikers are above average in everything besides pace and movement without the ball. Unfortunately these are two area that rank in top 3 requisite to be successful in this league.
 
For me the priority is this:
1. Left winger
2. Striker
3. Left back
4. Center Mid

Left wing is so important IMO. As well as giving us a more balanced & creative attacking threat, it'll be like 2 signings because it will allow us to stop wasting Wickham on the wing. Having our 2 main strikers properly competing for one spot in a team that offers them better service, and perhaps bringing in a 3rd striker to develop, would be all we need to progress offensively. After that, we could really do with a permanent signing of a young defender who, in a perfect world, could play left back and center back.
Only after all of these signings would I consider another CM. For me this is last on our priority list because I'm still hoping on our attacking threat increasing with the full return of Giacc and Alvarez. I'm also hoping Rodwell will come good too, but the jury is still out on that one :neutral:

Aye and the money/wages reqd to tempt a player like that to SAFC is gonna be readily available.

In Gus's chosen 1 upfront formation Fletcher and Wickham rotating are more than enough to finish midtable. What we need are the players to provide the ammo and some others to tighten up at the back. LM has to be the priority this January.
Altidore/Graham/Giaccarini etc need to be eased out asap to free up cash as theyre wasting both our time and theirs atm.
