Running thread 2014

I don't think so mate, very informal gathering organised by the strollers. Started at the shelter opposite the fountain at seaburn and finished at Latimers. Lots of confusion around shields as no marshals were on course as and only around 50 runners so we ended up taking a wrong left turn.

Very tough opening 4 miles into the wind, some tough little hills and climbs but a very enjoyable course none the less and definitely potential to grow into something bigger and better.

Fantastic goody bag and t shirt at the end (much better than most 'proper' races) and free coffee and bacon sarnies at the Mariott after made it a great day.

Well done the strollers for organising it and all for a great cause as well.

I'll have to keep an eye out for next year. Where was it publicised? It wasn't on northeastraces.com

done 11.75mile yesterday and went out kitted up as it was freezing, within 2 mile I wish I had never worn my thermals, the rest of the jog was a pure struggle but I battled through it and got to what I wanted to, im aching today mind going to have a few days rest

What do people tend to have for breakfast before a race ?
I had a carbohydrate drink 500 mls, I then blend a banana with fibre cereal with milk with ice and also ate a chia seed bar on Sunday. Sometimes I have a sandwich too, before kielder I had a bagel. Normally a little bag of haribo about 10 minutes before I start.

You now this storm bomb (?) thats going on for the next week or so, anyone heard any longer forcasts, specifically for Saltwell on the 20th....?

Three weetabix and coffee (seperately) with a nutrigrain bar or banana before the start.
If its 10mile or a half, probably a jam sandwich too.

Worth bumping this thread . . never seen it so far down the board.

At year end how's everyone got on with their goals?

I've had a sub 36 10k and a sub 80 half . . which is faster than I ever thought I'd manage. Finished the year with shin splints, but just about over it now and looking forward to 2015 ;)

8 mile Loftus Poultry run on Sunday & then Parkruns on Christmas Day & the 27th & I'll have exceeded the average weekly mileage I set myself when I started up again in the summer. I'm still hopeful of getting my Parkrun time down to 25 mins or less & it's going to be damned close if I don't get it.

Haven't ran for over a week now, stupidly went over on my ankle on the bloody school run last week. After x-rays they discovered it's just a bad sprain but it's so frustrating that i can't train for now. I'm signed up for a fair few runs next year already so i need to be prepared.

I'm marshalling at the Saltwell 10k on Saturday though, that should be good.

I've had 13 months mostly injured and its been an absolute nightmare, started up running again about 5 week ago and trying to not get carried away yet, hoping for a good 2015 fitness wise , on the plus side I'm looking more handsome every day

(p.s - when I say nightmare, when put into perspective with some peoples problems I know its nowt - running is not my life, its just an enjoyable hobby).

Managed to get the miles in I wanted upto 1150 for now and had a good 2 month out injured, I was aiming for 1000, under 20 mins 5k I got to 18.30, next year sub 40 10k and under 1hr 30 for half are my aims, with 1250 miles

I'd love to finish my 3 marathon career with a sub 3h 30 at London in April. After that I want to concentrate on getting faster over half mara and 10k, maybe 40 minute 10k, and 1h 35 half mara would be good for me. Just keeping fit and enjoying it would also be good as since I have tried to get faster had nowt but tweaks and aches as most probably do but never had a problem when I went at my own pace!!

Are you just totting up miles or mixing it up with shorter threshold runs, interval training etc?

What are peoples opinions of the different park run routes in the north east ?

must be about 18months since I last did a park run and have only tried two routes - sunderland and south shields.

Sunderland is well organised, all on smooth tarmac but a difficult bank thrown in (although you get to run down it as well as up), can often be windy up there, overall its probably tougher than most park runs I would imagine.

Shields I found to be pretty similar although can imagine if its a windy day you will get the full brunt off the north sea and would ruin you, some of it was on what you would maybe class as trail and a bit winding around which doesn't help, nice route to do on a sunny day though and no killer bank.

Anyone tried - chester le st, Hartlepool, Boro, Newcastle ?

may try doing a few after the new year

I'm a regular at the Hartlepool run. Its an out & back from the marina to the edge of Seaton Carew along the seafront promenade. It's very flat so a lot of people coming from other runs seem to get pbs.

Couldn't be arsed to travel further like, apart from my triathlon club winter series.

I enjoy Sunderland, South Shields is my pb, cls is boring. Saltwell is hilly but I enjoyed the challenge. Done one in hull when I was away one weekend.

, must be a bugger when windy though ?

edit.... cant believe people do the park run on a Christmas morning mind
