The "Eleven 'o' one" sculpture, or Tommy to his friends, is is situated on the Seaham seafront near the Terrace Green cenotaph. It was created by local artist Ray Lonsdale and stand at 9ft 5ins tall, weighing 1.2 tonnes. Tommy is a statue of a WW1 soldier who sat at rest at the end of the first world war, contemplating the horrors that unfolded during that time.

It was only meant to be temporarily placed at Seaham, however the local community raised £85k to buy it and keep it in place in Seaham! This was supported by a Facebook page called Mission 1101 and the campaign attracted more than 4,000 members.

There's a very moving poem on the back of the base of the sculpture;
Now in the wake of this glorious slaughter,
He'd seen many a soul cleansed in filthy water,
Seen Godless men reach out for the bible,
As lead tore the flesh from both friend and rival,
Soon home to the joy and celebration of kin,
Drunken slaps on the back at a favourite inn,
But heavy in his pocket lies a small piece of card,
And the note written on it will break a mothers heart.

This is a sunrise shot taken on 8th December 2014.

Like it, particularly the light hitting the langdale pikes(?).

Maybe I wouldn't have had the fence coming so far into the scene though, it gets in the way of that lovely light.

Great sky, but like I said to smoker a few years back you need a stronger silhouette . I think I suggested dunstanburgh to him too ;). Maybe Bamburgh, pretty recognisable shape

Yes, I know what you mean. Certainly Dunstanburgh but there was some cloud cover forecast there so I went a bit further to Holy Island...
