Not 'freak accidents' at all. They are an inevitable consequence of bowling a hard ball 90mph at someone's head.

And all of those sports have taken steps to improve participant safety. Cricket seems unable to reform itself due to entrenched conservative, macho attitudes.

The demise of the bouncer will drive new innovations to get batsmen out.

How many pro golfers have been hit on the head by a golf ball in the last 12 months?

Good article from Sydney Herald:

http://www.smh.com.au/comment/time-to-ban-the-bouncer-20141127-11une7.html

Only sport other than boxing that allows you to deliberately attack the head of an opponent.

Well that's a load of bollocks. The use of the helmet - and the continuing adaptations to make helmets ever better - directly contradicts you. If what you said was true they'd still be batting in flat caps.

This was a horrendous, tragic, freak accident. The ball hit him on pretty much the one area it could that could cause him serious damage/death. It's absolutely awful but for people to suddenly get high and mighty now sounds like pretty shameful points-scoring.

Rubbish comparison.

You wouldn't expect your 13 year old son to be asked to do a term of bobsledding at school.

The only line in that article that agrees with your argument.

"it would largely ruin the sport as a contest" - utter bollix. Did it ruin the game and did people stop participating when they limited the number of bouncers, change the number of balls in an over etc? I remember watching the Windies bowl six bouncers an over in the 1970s and it was awful to watch.

The only people who would miss it are traditionalists and shit bowlers.

Your 13 year old son is not going to be facing a bowler who can hurl the ball down at 150 K ,though is he. He,s more likely to be knocked off his bike going to the game . So should we ban him from riding a bike?

Not sure if its been touched on but hope Safc give suitable recognition to Phillip Hughes tomorrow at the game.
Seriously? Ive already said its tragic & paid my own tribute to Phil Hughes but all these gimmicks are ridiculous. 63 second silences, leaving bats out, retiring shirts, applause anytime a batsman reaches 63...

People can be respectful and saddened without these 'gimmicks'.

What has todays society came to, people clambering over each other to show how upset/respectful they are:rolleyes:

I don't see people wanting to show there respect as a 'gimmick'..
The poor man has died playing sport, shouldnt happen.

Agreed, right now it is still very raw for a lot of people, especially those in Australia currently watching and playing cricket, over here with no cricket until April it feels much more distant. I've no doubt that there will be some very fitting tributes when the Ashes gets under way, despite that being a long way off.

I get the point that @Mackem DJ is getting at though, there's a time for tributes to be made, and if people start jumping on every event as an opportunity to show how much they're grieving, the gesture itself becomes meaningless and the grief hollow.

Its known as Grief Porn I believe. Why does the world need to see poor Michael Clarke sobbing away in a press conference? Thats what I turned my TV on to this morning.

It is sick.

if people start jumping on every event as an opportunity to show how much they're grieving,

Thats basically how society has been heading ever since Lady Diana died all them years ago.

People must not have gave a shit about anyone who died before her...

Michael Clarke is the captain of Australia's leading sport, him crying on tv at a press conference is a show of emotion,
one of his best mates in the game has just died man.

Tell me what you find sick about that??

Smoker do you play the game at all??

I'm trying to work out if you are just scared of the ball or on a windup.

Banning the bouncer would be a massive mistake and would make the game too easy for batsmen.

Silly knee jerk reaction.

FFS!

Here comes the macho mob.

Played to U 18. Right arm fast medium.

Totally irrelevant to the discussion either way.

A 13 year old has a softer skull than a 25 year old.

I wouldn't be keen on a hypothetical 13 year old son riding a bike on the road either, too many nutters out there.

Shame they stopped football defenders leaping in 2 footed. Makes the game too easy for strikers apparently.

The numbers playing and watching cricket are tumbling and this joker wants to make it even more boring?

Just stick to watching baseball SMOKER and let the fans play and watch a competitive game

Bouncers occasionally get a wicket but, let's not fuck about. They are only allowed because of tradition. This incident should hopefully see the end of the 'bouncer.

Rubbish - they exist because they are a part of the game. There's as much risk of a fielder getting smacked by a ball that is hit at them by the batsman. Ban all shots? Ban fielding? Bouncers are not dangerous in the modern game with modern equipment. For the hundredth time - this was a tragic, freak accident.

A 13 year old has a softer skull than a 25 year old.

The skull is protected by the helmet - Hughes was struck in the back of the neck.

For those who don't agree with bouncers...just don't watch it play cricket. Simple as that

99.9% of those who play don't want to change the rules, why? Because the know it was a freak accident and unlikely will ever happen again

Of course it's relevant. Why should people comment on a game they've never played.

In fact if we are going to ban the bouncer why don't we take it further. Ooh the ball might hurt so let's ban that and use a tennis ball.

See how stupid your suggestion is?? About on par with mine above.

I can understand the argument for banning it but its borne from ignorance of the game. Well meaning but ignorant all the same. Rules are ok as they are

Ban fielding in close aswell much more likely to get killed when some scrubby spinner bowls a half tracker and a batsmen leathers it towards some poor lad 5 yards away
