Swimming

Been swimming in the aquatic for nearly a year now as I can't run anymore due to various injuries. I enjoy it and its cracking facility right on our door step.

What's your injury mate of Dont mind me asking ? Swimming keeps you just as fit as running , just bit of a pain that you can't just get up n go as and when feel like it which is massive benefit of running

Stinks of piss and filthy.
Aye I agree, the changing rooms do stink mind , the pool itself seems fine though , ideal when the 50m lanes are open. You still swimming at thornhill mate ?

Ruptured my achillies between xmas and new year last year. Was just out for light jog to blow off a few cobwebs. Had to ring our lass to come and take me to Hospital. Had an op to fix it but even now after a year still feels like I've sprained me ankle even from been on my feet all day. Waiting to be fitted for some insoles of the podiatrist. Going to challange myself to a few long bike rides next year.
Changing rooms at the Raich are worse than the aquatic ones.

any other posters go swimming ?
forgotten how tiring it is, 56 x 50m lengths at the aquatic last night, surprised how busy it gets
We used to swim every day after a workout in the gym, the pool just gets full of pesioners floating about.

We did try to go first thing in the morning, however it was like Zombie dawn of the dead, waiting for the doors to open and pensioners slolwy creeping towards the us comming from all directions.

Can hardly swim but I am on the waiting list for Adult swimming class in south tyneside but there seems to be quite a waiting list. Hopefully, they will have spaces starting January sick of being the shittest swimmer in our house and that includes my 4 year old daughter

Try looking on swimtime.org I follow them on twitter. Seem to have info for lessons all over the north east. My Brother didn't learn to swim until he was in his 30's and now swims regular. It'll be worth it mate nowt better than been in the pool with kids on holiday.

Do you lose much weight swimming or just tone up?
Probably best to combine it with another exercise like running or cycling.

I would say its more of a toning exercise , few top swimmers look skinny , you need to be pretty strong and lean to swim well. Although it still burns off more calories than majority of sports.
As the other lad said , could combine It with running or cycling and the weight should drop off, especially if running (I'm Not convinced by cycling as its too time consuming to get the benefits and the local area is too flat and dodging cars is a pain, but each to their own). Good luck, before you know it you be joining sunderland triathlon club

I find cycling helps weight loss like.

Used to love swimming when I was young, represented North Yorkshire and Yorkshire a few times  Don't swim any longer as I find it so frustrating with the people who swim in your way/ float about when your trying to do lengths

Like a few posters i have to be careful on the running as my joints are cream crackered. But I try to swim twice a week and do about 2km each swim. It doesn't shift the weight and some of the better swimmers are not trim. I also love open water swimming as no pensioners get in your way! Doing a cross channel relay next year so i need to do some tidal swims to be prepared for that. I swam across the Humber this year under the bridge, that was a challenge with the current coming in and out. Keeps me fit and different!

You'll shift weight if you're in a calorie deficit. It does seem to be good at hitting muscles you'd forgotten you had.

Maybe I'm not shifting weight ( although I'm not trying) because all the swimming makes me hungry. It was worse in the better weather when I was doing 2 bike rides a week and the odd run. I was eating like a horse, oh and the occasion drink.

Have been doing swimming lessons now for 3 weeks and love it. The instructor really pushes you to out of your comfort zone which I think is great but some of the others in the class don't seem keen on. it just clicked last week doing backstroke and find it quite easy. The thing I have found I struggle with is breathing but i have seen improvement in that in the 3 weeks and I have only nearly drowned once but that is all part and parcel of the learning process.

f***ing hells bells mate. I find one length of that pool hard work. Usually manage about 20 in total and feel pleased with myself for it!
