Horrible to think you can die doing what you love. I'm sure Ben Holliake is relishing the game they're going to have up there.

RIP Phil

Awful, awful news. I completely understand that 'the bouncer' is part of the bowler's attack but the only defence for the bouncer appears to be that it's an intimidation tactic. It's intimidating because it's potentially dangerous. The bowler knows that, the batsman knows that. Deliberately putting opponents in danger wouldn't be accepted in most other sports. A rethink is needed imho.

RIP Phil. :(

Imagine being in Abbotts shoes at the minute aswell

Imagine bowling the ball that ultimately killed one of your pals, f***ing hell

This is tragic and I can not imagine how his team mates, friends & family are feeling about this. It seems to have rocked Cricket to the core. Sean Abbott too... How awful.

But as a side note it is sad that grief has turned into some kind of competition. This is ridiculous;

Are people who died before Princess Diana any less thought of or any less remembered? I think not. The cricket and sporting world should not need any OTT gimmicky bullshit to remember Phil Hughes.

The game of cricket is not (as you seem to believe) a game for namby pambys!

A skilled batsman welcomes the short ball as a genuine run scoring opportunity whereas the bowler is attempting to get him to mistime a hook shot, which can result in a catch.

Maybe you would be happier if they replaced the existing ball with a sponge one (that must be bowled underarm) and insist that players are only allowed to strike it gently for no more than a single!

The Aussies have already tried the Underarm bit;)

Very sad news about Hughes and Abbott must be suffering too.
No helmet would of saved him though,as the ball hit him below it on the back of his head.make the helmet any more cumbersome and they will make it impossible to see the ball or turn your head.
All our junior cricketers have to wear a helmet when batting plus the wicket keeper, which is a good idea .
You can't take bouncers out of the game though, otherwise the batsman will always know he can get on the front foot.

2 good mates playing against each other in a serious game of cricket. No blame at all to Sean Abbott. Doing what all fast bowlers do. Play the game hard but fair.
Tragic what happened and my thoughts are with Philip Hughes family and friends and also with Sean Abbott.

f***ing dire like. grief and guilt are f***ing horrible, one of my best mates died after a night out once and i still fucknig blame myself for his death just because if i hadn't called him that night we'd never have gone out on the piss... poor poor abbott will carry this with him his whole life. i can't imagine the level to which he will blame himself but i knwo a little of how he'll feel and how it will stay with him forever.

devastating for all concerned.

I can't help but think the helmets provide a sense of false security for batsmen, the same as the body/arm padding that didn't used to exist either.

When they didn't exist the technique in dealing with the short ball had to be spot on, now less so.
Good point

Still uncomprehendable, to be watching a ball come toward you, then nothing. All you can hope is that he enjoyed his life

Not ashamed to admit I shed a tear when I watched Clarke read the statement and the doctor pay tribute to Clarke.

I'm struggling to get my head round this to be quite honest. Such an awful day. Makes you thankful for what you have.

Same , also during that cricket Australia video

Darren gough broke down on talksport talking about it

There is something that just strikes a cord in this instance, certainly been on my mind a bit

Have you heard that clip when Jim Maxwell, a top top bloke, delivers the breaking news that he has died on abc radio, Jesus, hard to listen to

My respect for Michael Clarke has gone through the roof, and although he's grieving himself he will have to stay strong for the team

Basically as the doctors alluded to, as soon as he hit the floor, he was dead. It was only as the intensive care specialist was in the crowd that they kept him alive. The family knew on the night he wouldn't make it.

If you watch the video, he just a little look up after being hit, very haunting.
