Just read that the chances of the injury happening in cricket were 1 in a billion and they are more common in high speed car crashes.

God has taken him, RIP Phillip Hughes

Awful news. Nee idea what God's got to dee with it mind.

It's a freak accident. Please don't be so disrespectful as to suggest the bowler actually mean to cause harm/death.
This one was clearly an accident, but Jeff Thomson for one used to say he was out to hurt batsmen, and loved it when he did.

Well yes, obviously. But I'm struggling to understand why a protective helmet can't be 100% effective.[/MEDIA]
Because the ball hit him on the neck which isn't covered by the helmet.

Reports seem inconsistent but BBC site says top of the neck and TV report said back of neck so I'm guessing somewhere around the nape? Though that's hard to imagine.

Then you've got Broad's helmet with the amazing vanishing grills:

Shirley there's got to be a way to improve these things?

I'm presuming it's something to do with the medulla oblongata.

One bad apple shouldn't be used to suggest the rest of them are like that. As they clearly aren't.
They all go out there to hurl a potentially lethal object as hard as they can, towards potentially lethal/easily hurt body areas mate. All of them. Well except the ones who don't get into the team.

Very, very sad news and a tragic accident that is thankfully very rare. Oddly enough I was having a conversation in the pub on Friday night prior to this tragedy where it was suggested that the use of helmets in cricket had led to batsmen failing to carefully watch and avoid bouncers like players did in the 60's before helmets were introduced. Eventually we thought that the wearing of helmets was better than no helmets and had prevented lots of injuries.
