How often should I go to the gym?

If looking to build muscle most responses on here are vastly over estimating in my opinion.

Both frequency and duration of gym visits

Thats exactly what I do. Start off with 10 minutes of squats and sit ups. Then 45 minutes session. Absolutely no point going for an hour plus. Just clogging up the gym.

Well that really depends on the persons goals. We are routinely in there for 3 hours. While I appreciate the OP won't have the same goals, longer than an hour isn't necessarily pointless.

Christ mate

Is that rest times because of the weights you're moving or accessory work?

Takes me a good 30 mins each to do squats and deadlifts so my legs and back days are around 1 hr 20.

I train with weights once every 7-10 days and I'm making progress each session. Mind you, I'm pretty banged up owing to knackered discs and left sternoclavicular joint. The other days are filled with mobility drills and plenty of postural stuff to counteract 13 years as a desk jockey.

Find what works and stick with it.

Well I'll start of with lying on the inversion table for a while before starting my warm-up, which will depend on how I feel on that day; sometimes it can take a while if I'm pretty beat up. After that I'll start the actual main movement of the day; if it's deadlifts for example, I'll do some partials to get the hammies and glutes firing, before starting at 60kg. By the time I've worked my way up to 220kg for example, I may have already been in there for 45-60 minutes after my warmup/injury work. If I have say 2 sets at 220kg, I'll probably take around 5 minutes rest between the sets and then 5 minutes before I move in to squats. Again with squats, by the time I'm in full swing and at a top set, a decent amount of time may have passed, depending how I feel on the day. Then you have whatever other accessory movements I have that day, post-training work (again, inversion table stuff, maybe some mobility/injury prevention work). There's also a big group of us and even if we aren't doing the exact same thing, more time can pass by spotting people, giving them lift offs etc.

We aren't in there for that long every session, sometimes we are in and out within an hourm, but longer sessions aren't exactly uncommon.

Some session that , depending what I'm doing I can be in and out in 20 mins

What works for most..
Never be frightenend to take a 'day off' when your body is telling you.

Feet up with a good book. ;)
