Looking to book up and get out there for this series as it's one of the things I want to do before shuffling off this mortal coil. Anybody been out there before for a series? Amy tips, places to stay etc?

Excellent stuff. I've done a few tours but only one Ashes.

We chose Adelaide (ground has been butchered but still has one proper stand left, really quiet town) and Perth (retro 1970s ground which I loved but there's a risk they'll rebuild it, cracking city with loads around it) as our two. If you go that far you may as well do back to back tests and the choice is normally Adelaide/ Perth or Sydney/ Melbourne. The second set is loads pricier and the MCG isn't very cricket-y but with it being Boxing Day and 90,000 it's the dream for many.

The main thing is to go independent, you'll save a packet. The only exception to that is that people going on their own sometimes like a group so they're guaranteed company with like-minded people. Barmy Army Travel is the best tour group by all accounts. Either way the Barmy Army forum is a goldmine for tips. The Ashes 2013/14 forum should still be up, have a read through that.

The Ashes is a dear trip mind. It'll cost c£2.5k to do the cheaper of the two double headers and that's doing everything on the cheap, hostels etc. You can probably do Barbados next April for a grand less. 2015/16 Boxing Day/ New Year is Port Elizabeth/ Cape Town by all accounts, you could do those for £1.5k all in I reckon. South Africa is a class trip but you need to be well genned up to stay safe (we had no problem last time but there was a big group of us in Durban and Poledancer off here had us staying with a Millwall bloke in Cape Town). Then the hardcore lot all rave about Bangladesh but that would be brave

In fact they're all class, just do it, you'll love it :)

I always thought Durban (shithole) was the default Boxing Day Test in SA.

I went to the ill fated 06/07 tour, it cost a fortune, we got absolutely gubbed, it even snowed on Christmas Day in Melbourne ..........f***ing loved it from start to finish. I won't be going with Malaysia Airlines if I go again like

Money's not a problem, retired now so got enough to go and enjoy myself. Want to get to the Boxing Day test so that's on the card.

Lost it haven't they?

Sounds exactly like what'd happen to me. Strictly avoiding MA though.

Apparently Durban's crowds are so poor it's losing the game. PE looks a good ground to me so I hope they change it. You've been haven't you? It's the one with the band?

oh god yeah- they are at it all day.

always get in the FIRESTONE BOX there- another of Podgy's "friends."

The flight is a nightmare.Never slept once in thew whole24 hours. When you get there give your body serious time to recover from the jetlag.Been to Melbourne and Sydney. The MCG is huge. When I was there it was under redevelopment with part of it being open you could see downturn Melbourne. One thing that amazed me about Oz is the number of oriental people there. It felt like I was walking around Hong Kong at times. The Aussies are so friendly and laid back but the rivalry with us Poms is so intense. When your there make sure you see the sights as well as the time will fly over.Go up the towers in both cities as the views are spectacular.

Is the ashes definitely 17/18? Isn't it usually 1 1/2 after the English series?

Too many ashes series at the moment.

I fancy taking on a couple of tests. Was at the SCG in 2007 when we collapsed and were already 4 down.

They changed the cycle to avoid WC clashes so that 1.5 year thing is now 2.5 by my reckoning.

Evening folks, decided today with our lass that we're definitely going to do this. Anybody got any idea on when and who with is the best to book up?
