This came up before I tried to explain that if you work for a company and you're part of a collective effort and you're waiting for someone to pass you the baton you can spend a fuck load of time doing nowt and then when the work needs to be done, it doesn't matter what time it is ffs. As well as that, working freelance/temp/contract/agency work means that if you're not impressing your superiors then it costs them nowt to tell you not to bother coming back into the office tomorrow cos there's always somebody who's out of work and available at a few hours' notice.

I think it was Mackem Moo who said he wouldn't work through his dinner break no matter what.:lol:
It wasnt.

I'm surprised at how many people actually have the choice of not doing overtime. I worked 16 hrs overtime one week and went in on my day off but informed them i could only work until 12 (1 hr early) when i returned to work i received a written warning for walking off site.

I'll be expecting that these companies you mention take the same "collective" approach to sharing the benefits of their work (profits)...

I do but not in the branch.

I think it just depends on the type of work. I get paid to deliver things, rather than to be in the office for a set amount of time. Mr B is in software, and he was working till 1am on Wednesday. He doesn't get overtime either. It's a cultural thing in certain industries or jobs I suppose.

Do the counter staff in branch tend to get away on time?

No. I get a rather decent day rate as it is.

Management of people is about behavioural traits... You can sit through all the qualifications you want but still won't have the ability to manage people if you don't have the personality and behaviours to do so (I'm not suggesting you don't).

The condescending tone of your first paragraph is typical of a poor manager ;)

From a "qualified manager".

Part of qualifications are about things like required behavioural traits. It was maybe a condescending tone because I am sick to death of unqualified managers f***ing shit up all the time in all sorts of industries; then having the gall to question why you would need to have qualifications to do their job. Apologies if it came across too condescending, I am busy exiting a job where I have had my fill of this anti-qualifications attitude, even when they have to draft me in to fix their mess, only for them to still get the credit.

They get plenty TOIL so it doesn't count
And are paid accordingly. If you want to leave most industries to become a teacher you'll be taking a pay cut, in the UK. In more enlightened countries like Finland, this is not the case and the teachers are some of the best paid (and best qualified) people in the country. But the UK is too backward for such forward-thinking.

Have been asked to come in at weekends several times in the past and no fucker else bothered their arse. I still often do extra hours but it is always on my terms now.

I regularly work after hours and weekends through choice because I enjoy the work I do. It's 'my' work, as it were. My boss will end up getting part of the credit for it but he's not my employer. Just a supervisor.

Thing is I don't need the extra money, as it's such a shit wage I don't see the point in staying back an hour or so for peanuts when you don't need to

Heading in this afternoon to finish up some stuff. Won't be paid and I haven't been asked to and no one will be in the office bar myself, but if I don't get it done before Monday its likely I won't have time to get it done during the week.

Plus we have sky sports on the office tv so at least I can watch some footy.
