The Demise of the Workingmens Club

Had a right chinwag earlier with me fatha regarding the dying of pubs and clubs. Namely the WMC.

No prizes for guessing where I'm from - and round out way there were 4 WMC's within a couple of miles on top of 9/10 other pubs only a decade or so ago.

Now there's 2 WMC's and 3 other pubs. People just aren't going out for a few pints anymore and there's no sense of community round our way either IMO.

Crying shame like but just the way it's going.

Anyone care to add their opinions as to why??

Wouldn't be surprised if in the next decade (as like the last) there's a similar number of losses which could mean we've got nowt left by 2025.
The Demise of community and pride. Which happened the minute we had no industry anymore.

'The Establisment' see social gatherings of peasants as a threat

Cost

A pint out is significantly more expensive than a can in the house

Add to that it's no longer really acceptable for the hubby to clear off down the pub, leaving house and kids in the hands of the wife.

Smoking ban also encourages people to stay home.

Haven't read every post but Chilton Club disco used to be legendary up until the mid 90's, people used to come from all over the North East. The disco has long since gone and the club itself is just about hanging on.

It's a community based project a club. It's also a business that should be run by shrewd members for the members. I remember my mam and dad being members of the jubilee friendly club on roker ave, my dad was also a member of the mill view since God was a boy. Christmas was mammoth in the jubilee. Santie, trips, Saturday club for the kids. It was great at the time for a little place. The jolly girls had days away, togetherness and a laugh. The mill view was more and always more than that and has lasted. Not because it offered more but because it offered more to those the brought on the money.

Many a great Friday night there, then of to bishop for clubbing ....oh to be young again

what's the life expectancy of a club chairman from being appointed? (just out of curiosity)

That's just bull shit.

It basically comes down to them being run by older folk who won't move with the times & cater for the younger generation
What exactly could clubs do to attract the younger generation? They offer alcohol, pool/snooker, darts, live sport etc.

Nowt to do with either just a massive shift in peoples social habits in the last 10 - 20 years
Living in East Durham - makes you realise how much disposable income was lost since the mid eighties. Pubs and clubs closed. I could list many in every pit village.
