Pleased personally, the bloke wasn't well, but good opportunity to show he has recovered.

Some people on here are not fans, I am not sure why, but it would be a major boost if he was available for England again. Doesn't mean he has to go on every tour and play in every series, but having someone that ready to step in would be ideal.

No issues from me, we need all the batting strength we can for this summer If we are to get that urn back.

Lions is a good way to return. Low key games. I'd imagine that his experience will be a massive bonus for the younger lads in squad

Personally I don't think it's a great move. He clearly has some issues, international sport is not the place to resolve those.

He won't be short of cash, and we have the outline of a decent batting unit now. We should move on

The only complaint from me is about his age and potential longevity. Don't see Trott as the future of Emgland Cricket so I think I'd rather see a younger lad given a go. Someone who is going to be about for the next decade or so. He'll be 34 before next season starts.

Didn't appreciate his 'I'm not crackers' patter, but he's a quality cricketer and if he can sort out his vulnerability to short pitched balls, he will be a massive player for us again.

We need a blend of experience and youth, the more options the better as some of those younguns will be found out against Australia.

I understand this view, but for me people think about the long term too much, I know its nice to have a settled side, but sometimes you just pick a team for a series to make sure you win it, winning is the most important thing, and with so much test cricket coming up next year, I think he should be back in for a series or 2

If Ali continues to prove himself as a bowler then there is a possibility about dropping him down the order one and bringing in another batter

I appreciate what you're saying regarding the short term. I suppose this will be the acid test. If he can handle a tour away and come out of it unscathed then he could well be in line to return next summer. That said, I doubt South Africa A will have anyone as quick and hostile as Johnson. Mind that said, no fucker bar him and Morkel fit that description.

The only vacancy I can see is for an opener and other than that there is Stokes, Broad, Anderson and possibly Liam Plunkett, so unless you're thinking of dropping Stokes or perhaps one of the bowlers and only play 2 full-time bowlers then I can't see where he would fit in.

Maybe he could open in the shorter form of the game.

Steyn is canny quick like. And not against bowling the short stuff

Trott to open with Cook in the nxt Test series? Is that a backward step, or a sensible use of a talented player?

Backward step. Undoubtedly talented, but will there always be a question about his mental strength going forward?
