Standard of league cricket

Is league cricket now stronger, worse or the same following the collapse of the Durham leagues and the introduction of nepl2?

NEPL2 seems to be a steady standard, with the best sides outside of the Premier League in there, especially given Bunmoor's promotion now. Obviously barring a couple in the NTSL.

It should continue to improve IMO with further promotion/relegation allowing teams to find their level.

League cricket ruined by durham ccc. But benefits the county game and England so who cares

Care to expand on that??

Don't see how it's 'ruined' league cricket. If anything I'd say it's improved it. There's a proper league system with a proper pyramid in place. Teams will find their level and will be competing every week against teams of a similar(ish) standard.

Will take a few years to find level though with only 1 up 1 down. I also wonder how strict NEPL will be with criteria thus meaning limited movement over the years

There's been a structure down here in Kent similar to that you now have for many years. It does make matches and leagues more competitive I would say but I also think it encourages short termism which leads onto payment of players and living outside of your means. If there is a route now into the 'hallowed' ground of the Premier League then ambitious clubs will look to pay to get there. We have 10 team divisions down here with 2 up 2 down (something I would imagine you'll move towards in time) which means there is a lot of fluidity between leagues and one or two superstar signings really can make the difference in either being promoted or relegated.

Have been involved as a player and spectator for many years don't think it's better or worse

Fair enough mate by your other posts clear you have been watching cricket for a lot of years.

Guess you look at your own club and the standard the league they are currently in,20 years ago in the Durham Senior League for example was a hell of a lot better standard than the current Durham cricket league IMO.

Cheers marra

The Senior league was always very decent some real big players in the 70s.

The current Premier League has a lot of very decent players. Was involved with Brandon in the County League for many years some good and indifferent teams

Was surprised how many decent players were in the NEDL last season to be fair

Was involved with Horden for a lot of years only at second team level, but the first team we had for a 10 year period through the mid 80s to mid 90s was exceptional, especially in the cups, seemed to get to about 4 cup finals every year, however only remember them winning the league once or twice in that era, such was the standard of the senior league at the time.

Yes remember them having a good team

Wickets was the big thing at a lower level by far more teams have covers now that has got to improve the standard

Would the old DSL be a good comparison to the new DCL?

Surely it should be compared to the NEPL & NEPL1. It was generally accepted to be the league with the highest standard for a long time.

Yeah fair enough point that mate, guess I was comparing watching Horden 25 years ago to watching them now and both the standard of that team and the other teams they were playing back then was a lot lot better.

Would still say top senior leagues sides 25 years ago would be a lot better than NEPL 1 sides, however whether they would be better than top NEPL sides is open to debate.

I suppose players in the old leagues especially DSL were competing for a place in Durham CC minor country team. Not the same incentive these days.

Not sure about that mate, the league was extremely competitive in its own right, and think back then the players main priority was winning the league for their team.

Just my opinion mind, but don't think playing minor county cricket for Durham was that much of a carrot for the players back then.

Spot on mate. Never been replicated IMO and a big gap unfilled for local league players unless you went to Northumberland.
Minor counties cricket made for much stronger league cricket especially as most topsides had test players as professionals.

Sure you are right for many but IMO gave an opportunity for better players and many overseas also played.
