Finally joined the zoom club. Found a good ex-demo for under £1300 in great condition on eBay - looks pretty much unused apart from two small scratches. Rented a few in the past and been blown away by the quality. Using it tonight to shoot a gig at Digital and will post some results!

When you are spending that much money - wouldn't you prefer prime lense?

The 70-200 2.8 is one of the best lenses for gig photography.

I had to shoot a gig with primes once but the distance between the pit and the band didn't suit either of the lenses I had, which were a 50 1.4 and 200 2.8.

I like the flexibility of being able to zoom in and out when I only have one body on me. Granted, it's not the same has having one wide and one zoom on two bodies but this is the right investment for me at the moment.

Here are a few of the outcomes from Friday night, including some with a Tamron 24-70mm and a Sigma 15mm.

Ridiculously good lens. Hired one for a week and it's as sharp if not more than some primes I've used. Nice colour rendering too

looks like an absolute sausage fest there mind, Alex.

Was working on a photo shoot for a new fitness clothing brand today. Already in love with this lens! The colour, clarity and sharpness is just first class!

I have got the non-IS, F4.0 version and really like it. Obviously not particularly suited to your sort of work, but it is a quarter of the price.

It's very painful forking out all that extra dollar, but as you say, those few extra F-stops can make all the difference.

interesting photos... cant believe people show up to watch a bloke playing records.. not my idea of a gig.
A sign of the times I suppose. It's very, very popular. I do find it funny how they're just playing pre-planned sets and not really doing much, but if you like their music and you like clubbing then it's the best way to enjoy it the most?

Looks far too noisy for my liking.

The club, not the pics...

It seems to the the weapon of choice.

I've shot a number of smaller comedy gigs, usually with lighting that''s a bit ropy, using a few different primes - I have a selection of primes, mostly 50mm or thereabouts, obtained cheap off Fleabay

I'll intend to wait to buy a big f2.8 zoom when I consider my talent and bank balance justify it !

I'm the most talented fucker on here, as seen by my extensive length, aperture and girth.
