As you know facebook is not my thing but just thought I'd get back on to let everyone know that Evenwood CC as of Friday night will be officially homeless due to the trotters arms closing... We've been expecting it for a while but it's finally happened. Just goes to show what a difference 5 years makes, we've gone from having the swan, 5 strong teams, great officials and a happy club to no home at all.. A struggling 1st team.. No pavilion until we find a stupid amount of money...Lack of players... Lack of interest... And let's be honest it doesn't get much more desperate than daft c***s like me captaining your 1st team!! So just something for everyone to think about... Don't take things for granted because you never know what's around the corner!

Sad to see. Spent money on players that could have been used to improve things but that's the game we are in . Always got on well with John T and his brother when I was involved in junior cricket.

Sad to see clubs struggle

It's a shame. Most clubs in region run on a shoe string and rely on a few people to manage club. Players continue to let clubs down and just turn up for games.

Glad to see my club has turned the corner but players need to be helping out more

I would suggest you contact the local authority and speak to sports development team. They will help pull action plans together and target funding streams to help. Don't give up yet Evenwood but players need to help and not just bugger off to the closest team

It puts the current amount some teams are spending on players into perspective, although the paying of too many players is an issue that has royally pissed me off for a long time. Some people at those clubs need to remember what local cricket clubs are all about, and it's not "be in a higher league/win a trophy" at all costs. The best ??(but by no means only) example at the moment seems to be NEPL2, which is seeing a lot of clubs pay way over the odds for two, three, four players to come in and "prop them up" when those players have no actual affiliation or loyalty to the club in question. In the majority of cases, it will be a knee-jerk reaction to the prospect of relegation with the trap door to DCL1 officially open this year and two strong sides coming up to join NEPL2.

In my opinion, as a simple rule of thumb, if you have to shell out a load of money on journeymen players just to compete in a league then you don't really belong in that league in the first place. I've always believed in the value of one, good professional to a local club if he can help the local players (and club juniors) to improve; but beyond that, spending money on players who are chasing the short term dollar is usually downright irresponsible. The decision makers need to remember that its not their money they are pissing away, and they have a responsibility to make sure that their club is still around in 5, 10, 20, 50 years time. There are clubs now with dwindling junior sections (or in some cases no junior section at all) who continue to direct money towards a short fix in their first team. For me, that is shocking mis-management.

With regards to Evenwood specifically (who I'm not necessarily including in the above rant as I don't know what's gone on there) - I hope they pull through the troubles they're having. We played them for the first time in 2013 when the leagues merged and they seemed like a decent club and a good set of lads.

Hard to feel much sympathy for a side who constantly spent money on players in the 00's when their ground was dropping to bits and their teas were shit.

That said, one or two great people at the club who only have the community at heart. Don't get me wrong, the last thing I want to see is Evenwood ceasing to exist but I just think you have to get other things in order before looking at the playing staff.

Be interesting too see what happens to the junior players. there is one of them in the DCB U13 setup (U12 last year). His grandfather told me about Evenwood's problems last season but I didnt think that things would come to a head so quickly.
