just taken up running as a way to get fit. I have two questions

1. Any recommendations about earphones... mine keep falling out?!?

2. How much do people on here run a week in distance?? I know some of you are very serious so will run alot and I was just wondering is there a limit to how much you should be doing to minimize injurys?

1. Don't wear them

2. I run 40 mile a week, but I started with 3 5ks a week (9 mile effectively). If you're just starting out, start small and build up. Try to run 3 or 4 times a week, short distances until you tire. Then slowly add a bit more to each run. I found my 5ks became 7ks and then 5 milers, probably within 3 to 4 months of starting. When you get comfortable with that you can try pushing yourself a bit further, eg. quicker stuff on the track or longer tougher runs depending what your aims are. It's worth entering a race for a few months time, gives you a goal to work too.

Try your local park run too

5k Saturday and Sunday, nice and easy. I have now lined up all my spring events ... A half marathon, 16 miler, road marathon and trail marathon, spread across two months. After that, will try 5 and 10k.

Until Christmas will tick over 15 mile or so a week then try and get towards 40-50 for a couple of months.

Have managed to achieve all my 2014 target now of fastest 5k, 10k, half marathon, marathon and first ever ultra. Now deserve a rest and see which I can better next year. Priority is marathon ...

Completed my slowest ever 5k this morning but I'm actually over the moon. It's the first time I've went for a proper jog in about six months and it's probably the biggest achievement I've ever had fitness-wise!

Nice one - similarly I managed to achieve my 4 targets for the year - sub-19 5k, sub-40 10k and sub-1hr30 half plus Pentland Skyline hill race. My last target is to get my Level 2 UK Athletics coaching badge. Nearly there, but looks like it will be January.

For next year, want to improve 5k, 10k and half - in your opinion would it be better/easier in ascending or descending order?

Good stuff. I would start with a half in spring having built up stamina, and then use that endurance with some shorter training for 5 and 10k in the summer. Depending on how it goes, you could even go back for another half in autumn.

I would love to do sub 17:00, 36:00, 1:20, 3:05 next year. If I managed one of them I would be very very happy. It would need a few months of good training though, rather than a few weeks as I've managed upto now. That's all for another day though!

I have something similar to these.
I would also recommend listening to podcasts rather than music or at least mix it up.
I'm a bit out of practice at the minute but aim for 3 or 4 times a week with one of them being a longer run. Just build the distances week by week.
I've done just under 400 miles this year but 300 of them were before the end of April.

I use to mince all over sunderland with my music on mate , after bad injury im strying to get back into it but this time im trying to run without music as you start to rely on it too much. My advice for any new starter is to run without music, and also to join a club as will help you loads (although ive always ran on my own so what do I know..)

Im scared to join a club until i get my fitness up  Also can I ask, whats wrong with relying on music? Surely there will never be a point when I cant have it?

Mate I alwAys ran with music , found it took away boredom and help
Motivate , however I now want to be more aware of how I am running and just the surroundings in general, and traffic ! Also , if you did get into it then many races don't allow headphones , each to their own though

I only discovered that for the 1st time today when I downloaded the entry form for the Maltby Road Race & saw it has "ANYONE FOUND USING EAR PHONES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED" in big red letters near the bottom of the form.

After years of doing the occasional race for life etc I've decided to take running more seriously. I always feel brilliant afterwards. Have done the Gateshead park run the last two weeks & have entered the Great North 10k next year to give myself a goal to aim for.

Paced the wife round the park run a couple of weeks ago, did you have a Sunderland training jacket on?

need 7.5 mile tonight to pass the 1000 miles for the year a lot quicker than I did last year, 2 runs yesterday 4 miler in the morning and 7 on the night very easy pace for both anfd the 7 miler seemed to be into the wind all the way, finished the 2nd run with a 6.18 mile as I wanted to make a little effort at some point in the day.

No, one week I had a red hoody on & the other a pink & black running jacket. As it gets colder & darker I suspect my fluo yellow SAFC hat will make an appearance though :)

Coasts and Castles HM this Sunday. hoping for around 2h19m. Anyone done this before? If so what's the terrain like?

First time for me too.

Just had a sports massage. He was amazed with how much scar tissue and crap I had in my legs. Said he's seen nothing like it. Hopefully sorts my niggles out and I'm fit for Sunday.
