Powerlifting/Strength Training Thread

You could train more days but if it's serious strongman training that's probably not advisable. If you're doing strongman circuits with much lighter weight, you should be fine.

Update on this weekend regarding the comp - I'm not doing it. As I mentioned before it was postponed from July and after asking around I still couldn't get info on weigh in times, locations etc. I said to my girlfriend that if I hadn't heard anything by Sunday just gone, I was going in to meet prep for November 2nd which I know is going ahead. Me and my training partner are both training for the same meet though. He wants to redeem himself as he's not happy with his performance at the British this year (Squatted 270 at 79kg...). Will be recording a full squat session on Monday with me, him and a few others.

No, nothing like that. Just flippping some tyres around and some farmers walks, that type of thing.

Possibly some accessory work on squats. I'm just willing to pay £21 a month to be part of the gym, keep in the loop about how the lads my age there are doing (all the powerlifters there seem to be early 20s) and have access to things I can't have at home when I start to get a bit more advanced and identify proper weak spots.

The odd marshall arts class as wel.

Also  at the bit in bold.

Will be fine mate.

Yep, his competition best is 280kg so he's looking to better that. Won't be long before he's top 10 all time in the 82.5s for squat despite only moving up there recently.

10lbs down in this diet so far. Majority water weight but moving in the right direction.

Need to try and channel some stress in to the bar tomorrow. I can't let anything distract from my goals at the moment, but rather channel them to my benefit.

Are you on a cut?

Yep. Wouldn't usually do it in to a meet really but I've had 4 meet preps back to back due to cancellations etc and just wanted to get this cut started. If I notice any strength loss (barring just a bad session or two), I'll just maintain, but it shouldn't be an issue.

Success is a choice young Titus.

Indeed ;)

There are squat records to be broken

Kind of having a forced de-load this week. Not really failing anything (except OHP every second time) but I feel like hell. Some kind of stomach bug, stuff coming out of both ends.

I don't think going heavy on everything is a good idea. a) I'm probably going to fail things because I'm struggling to keep food down today and won't get enough volume. b) I might actually shit myself in the gym.

So going to focus on a lot of volume on the same exercises I'd be doing otherwise and also really focus on pauses on squats and bench press.

Hopefully that'll see me feeling nice and strong when I fight off this illness that's definitely AIDS or something bad like that.

Sunday will mark 4 weeks out from the GPC competition. Things are going pretty well. Next week I'm going to go for a 250kg squat (depending how I feel). I'm also going to see where my closer grip bench is with heavier weights, since it's been feeling a lot more comfortable when I've tried it, and managed 120kg x 7 (after a heavy single with my usual grip) yesterday and 125kg x 5 on friday. I'll also be making this week my last week of deficit deadlifts. I really need to hammer deadlifts in the upcoming off-season before next year's Euros.

Yeah, I've been stupid enough to try and go heavy when ill and it just takes longer to fuck off.

Hit a nice, easy belt less 150kg on squat for 3 as I was feeling better than I expected. Shouldn't be long before I can rep four plates. Felt like there was 2-3 reps in the tank, no hint of bum wink out of the hole, but I reminded myself I'm not pushing it too hard today.

I'd worked to that in paused triples then just did 100kg paused AMRAP to back off.

I feel happy, and that high volume back off set has made my legs feel nicely 'burny'

150kg x 3 beltless paused reps? That's good going, especially given the circumstances. You'll not be far off 4 plates with a belt already.

10mm lever belt and Titan Titanium knee wraps ordered for the comp. will probably only get one session in the wraps beforehand

Question re: training most days. Is it possible for someone of my training experience?

I'm keeping my gym membership because I like the place and the people who train there but there's a chance that this garage gym me and my mate were talking about could be happening seriously, for a very good price. Rack, bench, bar and 100kg of plates for about 250 quid each then I'll throw in for the extra plates I need. Could be even cheaper than that as another mate is interested in chipping in.

Thinking of using the garage for all the powerlifting stuff and using the gym for strongman type exercises. Is this advisable or too much?

Edit: I'm finding my squat training is going better if I ramp up to a top set. Everything else bar deadlift is 5x5 on the same weight. Going for a beltless 145kg for 5 tonight.
The natural instinct is always to train more and more. The longer I train, the more I realise training everyday whatever is completely doable, but it's actually just counterproductive and a complete waste of time. I'm currently going minimalist, and training less and less. I went through a phase where I did a slightly more outre version of 5/3/1 last year, which Wendler talks about in the book, I'd do squats, bench, deadlifts on the same day three times a week. Strength gains were decent. Now, I'm applying the same methodology and just training squats three times a week, nothing else other than maybe throw in a few cleans and some kettlebell swings just to keep fitness levels up when I have nothing better to do, then I leave. So far so good. I realise this goes against gym culture and bruh science.

Felt like shit today. Worked up to 210kg on deficit deadlifts and hit it for 2 reps with a bit left in the tank. Leaving it at the RPE I did was probably a good idea but I think hitting a single would have done more for my confidence. Back to pulling from the floor next week ad I'll see where I'm at. Will try both sumo and conventional.

Offseason is going to be a tremendous amount of deficit work. For somebody with my squat I should be deadlifting a lot more. Probably doesn't help that I pull beltless when doing conventional like.

If you backed off squats wouldn't you see in improvement in deads automatically? Just from not being so knackered.

At the moment I can't seem to pull well with a belt. It feels uncomfortable and I'm very restricted in my movements.

Yep but I'm closer to the British squat record than deadlift. I enjoy deads, I'm just shit at them. My PB is around 240-245.

Same with me regarding the belt. I can pull sumo with a belt fine, but conventional feels terrible so I just do beltless.
