If anyone wants any background on Freddie Wilde who wrote that "article" he often tweets that One day and Test Cricket don't have any place in the modern era but the namechecks people for giving him Test and ODI tickets.

Twenty20 groupie who live tweets IPL games. Unfollowed him ages ago. Bet he was gutted

Durham is a neutral name. Leave it as it is.

Have it as Sunderland and we will alienate the black and whites who support us, have it as newcastle and they'll be playing in front of 200

I sincerely hope not. Before we even consider the Newcastle/Sunderland debate I think it'll alienate a large portion of the core support.

Added to the fact Newcastle isn't in Durham. Plus, who gets the London tag? I doubt Middlesex and Surrey will want to come together.

This, the only reason Durham have Mags that follow them is.

1. They live in Durham and therefore need casting out for obvious reasons.
2. Northumberland has no first class team.

The idea is to have fewer teams so they can get more focus on the TV coverage. Us, Yorks, Lancs, Warks, Somerset would be largely be unaffected because they would just play at their usual county ground, London could have two franchises. It's deciding which cities lose out where there would be a problem e.g. if Notts are the only franchise in the East midlands Derby, Leicster fans won't support them (they might go to Birmingham though) and the same in the South outside of London. You'd probably have something like Durham, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Somerset/Taunton, London x 2, and Southampton.

If they are going to do this it might be better to disperse with county/city names all together.

Why not merge local teams just for the T20 only and have players taken from us, Yorks & Lancs playing as one team under the name of something like Northern Warriors with the rest doing something similar?

Where would they play, Lancs fans wouldn't support a team based in Yorshire and vice versa, Durham would be too out of the way for Lancashire and South Yorksire. They could play in different venues but it wouldn't really help to build up a regular fan base. It might work for the East Midds and there is no reason not to have a mixture of city and regional franchises, you could have a Home Counties one too.

None of the teams need have anything to do with the current counties if thats the way it was sorted out.

You could have someone do a deal with Yorkshire to rent out the ground for matches and then pick whoever they want from whatever counties. Clearly using this example it would make sense to have some yorkies in that team to add dinterest. Needs money men and also hellish marketing to make a success of it.

Yeah sharing the revenue and players with the counties would take some working out. Also arranging the fixtures as it would want to be in the middle of summer to get a big audience and not compete with other sports. A player like Ballance might hardly play for their county as England and the franchise would take up most of their time.

I loved the T20 when it first came about, bish bash bosh for a couple of hours after work, perfect.
Totally disinterested now, the speed has been taken out of the game, it's taken far too seriously now, yes I know what I've just said, it's taken seriously because of the money in the game, but there isn't really in England is there, it's just an inconvenience now.

Pretty good when it was only 8 or 10 games over a couple weeks but now it's so stretched out it's become hard to follow and a bit dull in all honesty.

No its not neutral. Durham is the name of the traditional county the team represents. Newcastle is in a different county all together and for that reason should not even be considered in any proposed re branding.

It would be like Lancashire calling themselves Huddersfield Hitters or Yorkshire becoming The Bury Batters.

People from Northumberland already have a team to represent them although hardly anyone bothers to go and watch them.

If any Durham team ever used the word Newcastle in their name I would never set foot in the Riverside again and would stop supporting them full stop. Its as simple as that and I don't think I would be the only one.

Durham is indeed neutral. It is the only name that can be used without causing grievances between people who support Sunderland & Newcastle who're from the county itself.

And you've just proved why Durham is a neutral name. Well done.
